ਕੂਆ ਕੋ ਮੇਢਕੁ ਨਿਧਿ ਜਾਨੈ ਕਹਾ ਸਾਗਰ ਕੀ ਸ੍ਵਾਂਤ ਬੂੰਦ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਨ ਸੰਖ ਜੀਅ ਜਾਨਈ ।
kooaa ko medtak nidh jaanai kahaa saagar kee svaant boond mahimaa na sankh jeea jaanee |

Just as a frog living in well cannot know the greatness and extent of the ocean, and the hollow conch shell cannot appreciate the importance of the ambrosial drop of rain water that turns into a pearl when it falls on an oyster.

ਦਿਨਕਰਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਕੋ ਉਦੋਤ ਕਹਾ ਜਾਨੈ ਉਲੂ ਸੇਂਬਲ ਸੈ ਕਹਾ ਖਾਇ ਸੂਹਾ ਹਿਤ ਠਾਨਈ ।
dinakar jot ko udot kahaa jaanai uloo senbal sai kahaa khaae soohaa hit tthaanee |

Just as an owl cannot know the light of the Sun or a parrot cannot eat the insipid fruits of a silk cotton tree nor can he love them.

ਬਾਇਸ ਨ ਜਾਨਤ ਮਰਾਲ ਮਾਲ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕੋ ਮਰਕਟ ਮਾਨਕੁ ਹੀਰਾ ਨ ਪਹਿਚਾਨਈ ।
baaeis na jaanat maraal maal sangat ko marakatt maanak heeraa na pahichaanee |

Just as a crow cannot know the importance of the company of swans nor can a monkey appreciate the value of gems and diamonds.

ਆਨ ਦੇਵ ਸੇਵਕ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਸੇਵ ਗੂੰਗੇ ਬਹਰੇ ਨ ਕਹਿ ਸੁਨਿ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਈ ।੪੭੦।

Similarly, a worshipper of other gods cannot understand the significance of serving True Guru. He is like a deaf and dumb person 'whose mind is not at all receptive to the sermons of the True Guru and therefore cannot act upon them. (470)
