ਜੈਸੇ ਕੇਲਾ ਬਸਤ ਬਬੂਰ ਕੈ ਨਿਕਟ ਤਾਂਹਿ ਸਾਲਤ ਹੈਂ ਸੂਰੈਂ ਆਪਾ ਸਕੈ ਨ ਬਚਾਇ ਜੀ ।
jaise kelaa basat baboor kai nikatt taanhi saalat hain soorain aapaa sakai na bachaae jee |

Just as leaves of a plaintain tree are torn by the thorns of an acacia tree growing within its proximity, it can not free itself from the hold of the thorns without damaging itself.

ਜੈਸੇ ਪਿੰਜਰੀ ਮੈ ਸੂਆ ਪੜਤ ਗਾਥਾ ਅਨੇਕ ਦਿਨਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਹੇਰਤਿ ਬਿਲਾਈ ਅੰਤਿ ਖਾਇ ਜੀ ।
jaise pinjaree mai sooaa parrat gaathaa anek dinaprat herat bilaaee ant khaae jee |

Just as a parrot in a small cage learns much but he is watched by a cat who one day catches it and eats it up.

ਜੈਸੇ ਜਲ ਅੰਤਰ ਮੁਦਤ ਮਨ ਹੋਤ ਮੀਨ ਮਾਸ ਲਪਟਾਇ ਲੇਤ ਬਨਛੀ ਲਗਾਇ ਜੀ ।
jaise jal antar mudat man hot meen maas lapattaae let banachhee lagaae jee |

Just as a fish feels happy living in water but an angler throws the bait tied at the end of a strong thread and the fish is enticed to eat it. When the fish bites the bait, it bites the hook as well making it convenient for the angler to pull it out.

ਬਿਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਾਧ ਮਿਲਤ ਅਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਿ ਅੰਗ ਅੰਗ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਗਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਾਇ ਜੀ ।੬੩੪।
bin satigur saadh milat asaadh sang ang ang duramat gat pragattaae jee |634|

Similarly, without meeting the God-like True Guru, and keeping company of base people, one acquires base wisdom that becomes the cause of his falling in the hands of angels of death. (634)
