ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik oankaar satigur prasaad |

One Oankar, the primal energy, realized through the grace of divine preceptor

ਪਉੜੀ ੧

ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ਇਕਾਂਗ ਲਿਖਿ ਊੜਾ ਓਅੰਕਾਰੁ ਲਿਖਾਇਆ ।
ekankaar ikaang likh aoorraa oankaar likhaaeaa |

That homogenous supreme reality (God) ) first was written as numeral one mulmantr – the credal formula) and then He was inscribed as Ura syllable of Gurmukhi, further pronounced as Oankar.

ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਹੁਇ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਸਦਾਇਆ ।
sat naam karataa purakh nirbhau hue niravair sadaaeaa |

Then He was called satinamu, the truth by name. Kartapurakh, the creator Lord, nirbhau, the fearless one, and Nirvair, withou rancour.

ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਪਰਤਖਿ ਸੋਇ ਨਾਉ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਭਾਇਆ ।
akaal moorat paratakh soe naau ajoonee saibhan bhaaeaa |

Then emerging as the timeless akal murati to caIled as unborn and self-existent.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਸੁ ਆਦਿ ਸਚੁ ਜੁਗਹ ਜੁਗੰਤਰਿ ਹੋਂਦਾ ਆਇਆ ।
gur parasaad su aad sach jugah jugantar hondaa aaeaa |

Realized through the grace of Guru, the divine preceptor, the current of this primeval truth (God) has continuously moving since before the beginning and throughout the Ages.

ਹੈ ਭੀ ਹੋਸੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਉ ਸਚੁ ਦਰਸਣੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ।
hai bhee hosee sach naau sach darasan satiguroo dikhaaeaa |

He is verily the truth and will continue to be the truth for ever.

ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਲਿਵ ਲੀਣੁ ਹੋਇ ਗੁਰੁ ਚੇਲਾ ਪਰਚਾ ਪਰਚਾਇਆ ।
sabad surat liv leen hoe gur chelaa parachaa parachaaeaa |

The true Guru has made available (for me) the glimpse of this truth.

ਗੁਰੁ ਚੇਲਾ ਰਹਰਾਸਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੀਹ ਇਕੀਹ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਉ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਇਆ ।
gur chelaa raharaas kar veeh ikeeh charrhaau charrhaaeaa |

One who merging his iousness in the Word establishes a relationship of Guru and disciple, that disciple devoting himself to the Guru and progressing from worldliness attunes his consciousness in and with the Lord.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਇਆ ।੧।
guramukh sukh fal alakh lakhaaeaa |1|

The gurmukhs had the glimpse of imperceptible Lord who is the fruit of delights

ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਅਕਾਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ਅਪਾਰ ਸਦਾਇਆ ।
nirankaar akaar kar ekankaar apaar sadaaeaa |

On assuming form that formless Lord was called as the boundless Ekankar.

ਓਅੰਕਾਰੁ ਅਕਾਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਇਕੁ ਕਵਾਉ ਪਸਾਉ ਕਰਾਇਆ ।
oankaar akaar kar ik kavaau pasaau karaaeaa |

Ekankar became Oankar whose one vibration spread as the creation.

ਪੰਜ ਤਤ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਕਰਿ ਪੰਜ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਪੰਜ ਸਤ੍ਰੁ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ।
panj tat paravaan kar panj mitr panj satru milaaeaa |

Then were created the five elements and five friends (truth, contentment and compassion etc.) and five enemies (the five evil propensities) of the creatures.

ਪੰਜੇ ਤਿਨਿ ਅਸਾਧ ਸਾਧਿ ਸਾਧੁ ਸਦਾਇ ਸਾਧੁ ਬਿਰਦਾਇਆ ।
panje tin asaadh saadh saadh sadaae saadh biradaaeaa |

Man harnessed the incurable ailments of five evil propensities and three qualities of nature and maintained his virtuous reputation of being a sadhu.

ਪੰਜੇ ਏਕੰਕਾਰ ਲਿਖਿ ਅਗੋਂ ਪਿਛੀਂ ਸਹਸ ਫਲਾਇਆ ।
panje ekankaar likh agon pichheen sahas falaaeaa |

Five Gurus one after the other composed thousands of hymns, bat in praise of Ekankar.

ਪੰਜੇ ਅਖਰ ਪਰਧਾਨ ਕਰਿ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਨਾਉ ਧਰਾਇਆ ।
panje akhar paradhaan kar paramesar hoe naau dharaaeaa |

The bearer of fivelettered name, Nanak Dev, became prominent like God and was called Guru.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਉ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਅੰਗਦੁ ਅੰਗਹੁਂ ਉਪਜਾਇਆ ।
satigur naanak deo hai gur angad angahun upajaaeaa |

These Guru are the true Guru Nanak Dev who created Guru Angad out of his own limbs.

ਅੰਗਦ ਤੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਅਮਰ ਪਦ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਭਾਇਆ ।
angad te gur amar pad amrit raam naam gur bhaaeaa |

From Guru Angad, Guru Amar Das, the attainer of immortal status of Guru and from him getting the nectar name of the Lord, Guru Ram Das was loved by the people.

From Guru Ram Das, like his shadow emerged Guru Arjan Dev

ਦਸਤਗੀਰ ਹੁਇ ਪੰਜ ਪੀਰ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੋਬਿੰਦੁ ਅਤੋਲਾ ।
dasatageer hue panj peer har gur har gobind atolaa |

The first five Gurus held the hands of the people and the sixth Guru Hargobind is incomparable God-Guru.

ਦੀਨ ਦੁਨੀ ਦਾ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹਾਂ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ਅਡੋਲਾ ।
deen dunee daa paatisaahu paatisaahaan paatisaahu addolaa |

He is the king of spirituality as well as temporality and is in fact irremovable emperor of all the kings.

ਪੰਜ ਪਿਆਲੇ ਅਜਰੁ ਜਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਮਸਤਾਨ ਸੁਜਾਣ ਵਿਚੋਲਾ ।
panj piaale ajar jar hoe masataan sujaan vicholaa |

Assimilating the unbearable knowledge of the earlier five cups (Gurus) in the inner core of his mind he re,mains merry and wise mediator for humanity.

ਤੁਰੀਆ ਚੜ੍ਹਿ ਜਿਣਿ ਪਰਮ ਤਤੁ ਛਿਅ ਵਰਤਾਰੇ ਕੋਲੋ ਕੋਲਾ ।
tureea charrh jin param tat chhia varataare kolo kolaa |

In spite of the six philosophies spread around, he reaching the turiyä (highest stage of meditation) has attained the supreme reality.

ਛਿਅ ਦਰਸਣੁ ਛਿਅ ਪੀੜ੍ਹੀਆਂ ਇਕਸੁ ਦਰਸਣੁ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਗੋਲਾ ।
chhia darasan chhia peerrheean ikas darasan andar golaa |

He has strung all the six philosophies and their sects in the strung of one philosophy.

ਜਤੀ ਸਤੀ ਸੰਤੋਖੀਆਂ ਸਿਧ ਨਾਥ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਵਿਰੋਲਾ ।
jatee satee santokheean sidh naath avataar virolaa |

He has churned the essence of the lives of celebate ascetics, the followers of truth, contented people, the siddhs and naths (yogis) and the (so called) incarnations of God.

ਗਿਆਰਹ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਸਮੁੰਦ੍ਰ ਵਿਚਿ ਮਰਿ ਜੀਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਅਮੋਲਾ ।
giaarah rudr samundr vich mar jeevai tis ratan amolaa |

All the eleven Rudrs remain in the ocean but those (divers) who seek life in death get the invaluable jewels.

ਬਾਰਹ ਸੋਲਾਂ ਮੇਲ ਕਰਿ ਵੀਹ ਇਕੀਹ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਉ ਹਿੰਡੋਲਾ ।
baarah solaan mel kar veeh ikeeh charrhaau hinddolaa |

All the twelve zodiac sings of sun, sixteen phases of moon and numerous constellations have provided a beautiful swing for him.

ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਬਾਲਾ ਭੋਲਾ ।੩।
antarajaamee baalaa bholaa |3|

This Guru is omniscient yet he possesses a childlike innocence.

ਗੁਰ ਗੋਵਿੰਦੁ ਖੁਦਾਇ ਪੀਰ ਗੁਰੁ ਚੇਲਾ ਚੇਲਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਆ ।
gur govind khudaae peer gur chelaa chelaa gur hoaa |

Guru Hargobind is the Lord in the form of Guru. Earlier a disciple he is now a. Guru i.e. earlier Gurus and Guru Hargobind are the same.

ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਆਕਾਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ਅਕਾਰੁ ਪਛੋਆ ।
nirankaar aakaar kar ekankaar akaar pachhoaa |

First, the formless Lord assumed the form of the Ekarikar and later he created all the forms (i.e. universe).

ਓਅੰਕਾਰਿ ਅਕਾਰਿ ਲਖ ਲਖ ਦਰੀਆਉ ਕਰੇਂਦੇ ਢੋਆ ।
oankaar akaar lakh lakh dareeaau karende dtoaa |

In the form of Oatikär (Guru) lacs of streams of life take shelter.

ਲਖ ਦਰੀਆਉ ਸਮੁੰਦ੍ਰ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਤ ਸਮੁੰਦ੍ਰ ਗੜਾੜਿ ਸਮੋਆ ।
lakh dareeaau samundr vich sat samundr garraarr samoaa |

Lacs of rivers flow into seas, and all the seven seas merge in the oceans.

ਲਖ ਗੜਾੜਿ ਕੜਾਹ ਵਿਚਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਦਝਹਿਂ ਸੀਖ ਪਰੋਆ ।
lakh garraarr karraah vich trisanaa dajhahin seekh paroaa |

In the cauldron of desires of fire, the creatures of lacs of oceans hooked in skewers are getting roasted.

ਬਾਵਨ ਚੰਦਨ ਬੂੰਦ ਇਕੁ ਠੰਢੇ ਤਤੇ ਹੋਇ ਖਲੋਆ ।
baavan chandan boond ik tthandte tate hoe khaloaa |

All these burning creatures attain peace by the one drop of sandal-delight of the Guru.

ਬਾਵਨ ਚੰਦਨ ਲਖ ਲਖ ਚਰਣ ਕਵਲ ਚਰਣੋਦਕੁ ਹੋਆ ।
baavan chandan lakh lakh charan kaval charanodak hoaa |

And lacs of such sandals have got created from the wash of the Guru's lotus feet.

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪੂਰਨ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਆਦੇਸੁ ਅਲੋਆ ।
paarabraham pooran braham aad purakh aades aloaa |

By the order of the transcendent, primeaval perfect God, the canopy

ਹਰਿਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਗੁਰ ਛਤ੍ਰੁ ਚੰਦੋਆ ।੪।
harigovind gur chhatru chandoaa |4|

And the royal umbrella are held over the head of Guru Hargobind.

ਸੂਰਜ ਦੈ ਘਰਿ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਮਾ ਵੈਰੁ ਵਿਰੋਧੁ ਉਠਾਵੈ ਕੇਤੈ ।
sooraj dai ghar chandramaa vair virodh utthaavai ketai |

When moon reaches the house of sun then (according to astrology) many enmities and oppositions erupt.

ਸੂਰਜ ਆਵੈ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਵੈਰੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਲੈ ਹੇਤੈ ।
sooraj aavai chandr ghar vair visaar samaalai hetai |

And if sun enters the house of moon, the enmity is forgotten and love emerges.

ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਇ ਕੈ ਪੂਰਨ ਪਰਮ ਜੋਤਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਚੇਤੈ ।
jotee jot samaae kai pooran param jot chit chetai |

The Gurmukh, having established his identity with the supreme light, always cherishes that flame in his heart.

ਲੋਕ ਭੇਦ ਗੁਣੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਪਿਰਮ ਪਿਆਲਾ ਮਜਲਸ ਭੇਤੈ ।
lok bhed gun giaan mil piram piaalaa majalas bhetai |

Understanding the mystery of the ways of the world, cultivating values and the knowledge of the Shastras, he quaffs the cup of love in the assembly (the holy congregation).

ਛਿਅ ਰੁਤੀ ਛਿਅ ਦਰਸਨਾਂ ਇਕੁ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਸਮੇਤੈ ।
chhia rutee chhia darasanaan ik sooraj gur giaan sametai |

As the six seasons are caused by one sun, similarly all the six philosophies are the result of the consolidated knowledge of the one Guru (the Lord).

ਮਜਹਬ ਵਰਨ ਸਪਰਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਅਸਟਧਾਤੁ ਇਕੁ ਧਾਤੁ ਸੁ ਖੇਤੈ ।
majahab varan saparas kar asattadhaat ik dhaat su khetai |

As eight metals mix to make one alloy, similarly meeting the Guru, all the vamas and sects turn out to be the followers of the way of the Guru.

ਨਉ ਘਰ ਥਾਪੇ ਨਵੈ ਅੰਗ ਦਸਮਾਂ ਸੁੰਨ ਲੰਘਾਇ ਅਗੇਤੈ ।
nau ghar thaape navai ang dasamaan sun langhaae agetai |

Nine limbs form nine separate houses, but only the tenth gate of tranquillity, leads further to liberation.

ਨੀਲ ਅਨੀਲ ਅਨਾਹਦੋ ਨਿਝਰੁ ਧਾਰਿ ਅਪਾਰ ਸਨੇਤੈ ।
neel aneel anaahado nijhar dhaar apaar sanetai |

Understanding the void (Sany), Jiv becomes infinite like the numbers of nil and anti and enjoys impossible water fall of His love.

ਵੀਰ ਇਕੀਹ ਅਲੇਖ ਲੇਖ ਸੰਖ ਅਸੰਖ ਨ ਸਤਿਜੁਗੁ ਤ੍ਰੇਤੈ ।
veer ikeeh alekh lekh sankh asankh na satijug tretai |

Then this jiv goes beyond the counts of twenty, twenty-one, millions or crores, innumerables, sad yugs, tretas yugs i.e. Jiv gets liberated from the time-cycle.

ਚਾਰਿ ਵਰਨ ਤੰਬੋਲ ਰਸ ਦੇਵ ਕਰੇਂਦਾ ਪਸੂ ਪਰੇਤੈ ।
chaar varan tanbol ras dev karendaa pasoo paretai |

As the four ingredients in a betel become beautiful and homogenous, similarly this benevolent Guru, transforms animals and ghosts into gods.

ਫਕਰ ਦੇਸ ਕਿਉਂ ਮਿਲੈ ਦਮੇਤੈ ।੫।

How can this land of saintliness be procured by money and wealth.

ਚਾਰਿ ਚਾਰਿ ਮਜਹਬ ਵਰਨ ਛਿਅ ਦਰਸਨ ਵਰਤੈ ਵਰਤਾਰਾ ।
chaar chaar majahab varan chhia darasan varatai varataaraa |

The dealings of the four sects (of Muslims), four vamas (of Hindus) and the six schools of philosophy are current in the world.

ਸਿਵ ਸਕਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਵਣਜ ਕਰਿ ਚਉਦਹ ਹਟ ਸਾਹੁ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ।
siv sakatee vich vanaj kar chaudah hatt saahu vanajaaraa |

In all the shops of fourteen worlds, that great banker (the Lord God) is doing business in the form of Siva and Sakti, the all pervading cosmic law.

ਸਚੁ ਵਣਜੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਹਟੀਐ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਕਰਤਾਰਾ ।
sach vanaj gur hatteeai saadhasangat keerat karataaraa |

The true merchandise is available in the Guru's shop, the holy congregation, wherein praises and glory of the Lord are sung.

ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਸਦਾ ਭਾਉ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਉ ਸਬਦਿ ਬਿਚਾਰਾ ।
giaan dhiaan simaran sadaa bhaau bhagat bhau sabad bichaaraa |

Knowledge, meditation, remembrance, loving devotion and the fear of the Lord are always propounded and discussed there.

ਨਾਮੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪੰਥੁ ਰਤਨ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ।
naam daan isanaan drirr guramukh panth ratan vaapaaraa |

Gurmukhs, who are steadfast in remembering the name of Lord, ablution and charity, make bargains of jewels (virtues) there.

ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸਚ ਖੰਡਿ ਵਾਸਾ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰਾ ।
praupakaaree satiguroo sach khandd vaasaa nirankaaraa |

The true Guru is benevolent and in his abode of truth, the formless Lord resides.

ਚਉਦਹ ਵਿਦਿਆ ਸੋਧਿ ਕੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਸਚੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ।
chaudah vidiaa sodh kai guramukh sukh fal sach piaaraa |

Practising all the fourteen skills, the gurmukhs have identified love towards the truth as the fruit of all delights.

ਸਚਹੁਂ ਓਰੈ ਸਭ ਕਿਹੁ ਉਪਰਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚੁ ਆਚਾਰਾ ।
sachahun orai sabh kihu upar guramukh sach aachaaraa |

Everything is below truth but, for the gurmukhs truthful conduct is higher than the truth.

ਚੰਦਨ ਵਾਸੁ ਵਣਾਸਪਤਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਤਰੈ ਸੈਸਾਰਾ ।
chandan vaas vanaasapat gur upades tarai saisaaraa |

As the fragrance of sandal makes the whole vegetation fragrant, the whole world gets across through the teachings of the Guru.

ਅਪਿਉ ਪੀਅ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹੁਸੀਆਰਾ ।੬।
apiau peea guramat huseeaaraa |6|

Drinking the nectar of the Guru's teaching, the Jiv becomes awake and alert.

ਅਮਲੀ ਸੋਫੀ ਚਾਕਰਾਂ ਆਪੁ ਆਪਣੇ ਲਾਗੇ ਬੰਨੈ ।
amalee sofee chaakaraan aap aapane laage banai |

Servants, addict as well as teetotaller, may be in the vicinity, but the minister

ਮਹਰਮ ਹੋਇ ਵਜੀਰ ਸੋ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਪਿਆਲਾ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਮੰਨੈ ।
maharam hoe vajeer so mantr piaalaa mool na manai |

Who knows ins and outs of the court never accepts their advice.

ਨਾ ਮਹਰਮ ਹੁਸਿਆਰ ਮਸਤ ਮਰਦਾਨੀ ਮਜਲਸ ਕਰਿ ਭੰਨੈ ।
naa maharam husiaar masat maradaanee majalas kar bhanai |

The ignorant one who tries to be clever or feigns indifference is expelled by the minister from the court.

ਤਕਰੀਰੀ ਤਹਰੀਰ ਵਿਚਿ ਪੀਰ ਪਰਸਤ ਮੁਰੀਦ ਉਪੰਨੈ ।
takareeree tahareer vich peer parasat mureed upanai |

In speaking and writing like this minister, loyal devoted disciples, have been created by the Guru.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਅਲਖੁ ਨ ਲਖੀਐ ਅਮਲੀ ਸੂਫੀ ਲਗਨਿ ਕੰਨੈ ।
guramat alakh na lakheeai amalee soofee lagan kanai |

Those addicts, who have not had the glimpse of the Lord through the wisdom of the Guru, never associate with the teetotallers (the holy ones).

ਅਮਲੀ ਜਾਣਨਿ ਅਮਲੀਆਂ ਸੋਫੀ ਜਾਣਨਿ ਸੋਫੀ ਵੰਨੈ ।
amalee jaanan amaleean sofee jaanan sofee vanai |

The addicts are acquainted with addicts, likewise, teetotallers meet the teetotallers.

ਹੇਤੁ ਵਜੀਰੈ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹ ਦੋਇ ਖੋੜੀ ਇਕੁ ਜੀਉ ਸਿਧੰਨੈ ।
het vajeerai paatisaah doe khorree ik jeeo sidhanai |

The affection between a king and his minister is such as if the same one life current is moving in two bodies.

ਜਿਉ ਸਮਸੇਰ ਮਿਆਨ ਵਿਚਿ ਇਕਤੁ ਥੇਕੁ ਰਹਨਿ ਦੁਇ ਖੰਨੈ ।
jiau samaser miaan vich ikat thek rahan due khanai |

This relationship is also like the relation of the sword in the sheath; the two may be separate, yet they are one ( i.e. sword in sheath is yet called sword only).

ਵੀਹ ਇਕੀਹ ਜਿਵੈਂ ਰਸੁ ਗੰਨੈ ।੭।
veeh ikeeh jivain ras ganai |7|

Likewise is the relation of gurmukhs with the Guru; they are subsumed in each other in such a manner as is the juice and the sugarcane.

ਚਾਕਰ ਅਮਲੀ ਸੋਫੀਆਂ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹ ਦੀ ਚਉਕੀ ਆਏ ।
chaakar amalee sofeean paatisaah dee chaukee aae |

Servants, addict (of the Lord's name) as well as teetotallers devoid of Mitn came to the Lord king's presence.

Now, the so called teetotallers (religious persons) were engaged to serve drinks (nam) to the addicts.

ਮਤਵਾਲੇ ਅਮਲੀ ਹੋਏ ਪੀ ਪੀ ਚੜ੍ਹੇ ਸਹਜਿ ਘਰਿ ਆਏ ।
matavaale amalee hoe pee pee charrhe sahaj ghar aae |

The latter became exhilerated in the name of the Lord and attained tranquility

ਸੂਫੀ ਮਾਰਨਿ ਟਕਰਾਂ ਪੂਜ ਨਿਵਾਜੈ ਸੀਸ ਨਿਵਾਏ ।
soofee maaran ttakaraan pooj nivaajai sees nivaae |

But the so-called religious persons (teetotallers who served mans to others) remained involved in the so-called prayer and ritualistic worship.

ਵੇਦ ਕਤੇਬ ਅਜਾਬ ਵਿਚਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਖੁਦੀ ਬਹਸ ਬਹਸਾਏ ।

They under the tyranny of their religious books, the Vedas and the Katebas, kept busy in arrogant debates and discussions.

Inside gather the privileged persons but outside assemble the commoners.

ਪੀਐ ਪਿਆਲਾ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਖਾਸਾਂ ਮਹਲਿ ਪੀਲਾਵੈ ।

The Emperor (Lord) Himself quaffes the cup (of love) and arranges to serve the select ones inside.

ਦੇਵਨਿ ਅਮਲੀ ਸੂਫੀਆਂ ਅਵਲਿ ਦੋਮ ਦੇਖਿ ਦਿਖਲਾਵੈ ।

Keeping in view the two categories of the likely addicts and the teetotallers (so-called religious persons) He Himself distributes the wine of love to them.

ਕਰੇ ਮਨਾਹ ਸਰਾਬ ਦੀ ਪੀਐ ਆਪੁ ਨ ਹੋਰੁ ਸੁਖਾਵੈ ।
kare manaah saraab dee peeai aap na hor sukhaavai |

The teetotaller (engaged in ritualism) neither drinks the wine of love himself nor allows others to drink.

ਉਲਸ ਪਿਆਲਾ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰਿ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਦੇਇ ਨ ਪਛੋਤਾਵੈ ।
aulas piaalaa mihar kar virale dee na pachhotaavai |

Getting pleased, that Lord goes on giving the cup of His grace to the rare ones and never regrets.

ਕਿਹੁ ਨ ਵਸਾਵੈ ਕਿਹੈ ਦਾ ਗੁਨਹ ਕਰਾਇ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਬਖਸਾਵੈ ।
kihu na vasaavai kihai daa gunah karaae hukam bakhasaavai |

None is to blame, lie himself makes the creatures commit crime and himself pardons their sins in the hukam, the divine will.

Transcending the illusory phenomenon of the actions of Siva and his Sakti, they quaff the cup of love and stabilize in their own self.

ਰਾਜਸੁ ਤਾਮਸੁ ਸਾਤਕੋ ਤੀਨੋ ਲੰਘਿ ਚਉਥਾ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ।

Going beyond the three qualities of nature, the rajas, tamas and sattv, they attain the fourth stage of supreme equipoise.

ਗੁਰ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਖੁਦਾਇ ਪੀਰੁ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਪੀਰੁ ਮੁਰੀਦੁ ਲਖਾਇਆ ।

Guru, Gobind and Khuda and Pir are all one, and the Sikhs of the Guru hold and know the inner truth of the Pir and Murid. i.e. the spiritual leader and the follower disciple.

ਸਚੁ ਸਬਦ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਚੁ ਸਚਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ।

Enlightened by the true word and merging their consciousness in the Word they absorb their own truth into the supreme truth.

sabad surat araadheeai bhaae bhagat bhai sahaj vigasai |

By absorbing the consciousness in the Word He is adored, and cherishing love, devotion and His awe He spontaneously blooms in the heart.

ਨਾ ਓਹੁ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਸੋਗੁ ਹੋਇ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਭੋਗੁ ਵਿਣਸੈ ।

He never dies nor becomes sorrowful. He always goes on bestowing, and his bounties are never exhausted.

ਗੁਰੂ ਸਮਾਣਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਹਸੈ ।

People say that the Guru has passed away but the holy congregation smilingly accepts Him as indestructible.

ਛੇਵੀਂ ਪੀੜ੍ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾ ਪੀੜ੍ਹੀ ਕੋ ਦਸੈ ।
chheveen peerrhee guroo dee gurasikhaa peerrhee ko dasai |

Guru (Hargobind) is the sixth generation of Gurus but who can tell about the generations of the Sikhs.

ਸਚੁ ਨਾਉਂ ਸਚੁ ਦਰਸਨੋ ਸਚ ਖੰਡ ਸਤਿਸੰਗੁ ਸਰਸੈ ।

The concepts of true name, true glimpse, and the true abode get their explanation only in the holy congregation.

ਪਿਰਮ ਪਿਆਲਾ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲੁ ਪਾਰਸੁ ਪਰਸੈ ।

The cup of love is quaffed in the holy congregation and there only the touch of the philosopher's stone (Lord), loving to devotees is received.

In the holy congregation, the formless one assumes form and there only the unborn, timeless

Being is eulogized. The truth only prevails there and everyone is tested on the touchstone of truth there.

Creating Brahma, Visnu and Mahes'a he performed the sports of ten incarnations.

ਛਿਅ ਰੁਤਿ ਬਾਰਹ ਮਾਹ ਕਰਿ ਸਤਿ ਵਾਰ ਸੈਂਸਾਰ ਉਪਾਇਆ ।

Producing six seasons, twelve months and seven days he created the whole world.

Scribing the writs of birth and death, He recited the Vedas, Shastras and the Puranas.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਦਾ ਆਦਿ ਅੰਤੁ ਥਿਤ ਨ ਵਾਰੁ ਨ ਮਾਹੁ ਲਿਖਾਇਆ ।

About the beginning and end of the holy congregation He did not prescribe any date, day or month.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਚੁ ਖੰਡੁ ਹੈ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਸਾਇਆ ।
saadhasangat sach khandd hai nirankaar gur sabad vasaaeaa |

Holy congregation is the abode of truth wherein resides the formless One in the form of Word.

ਬਿਰਖਹੁਂ ਫਲੁ ਫਲ ਤੇ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਅਕਲ ਕਲਾ ਕਰਿ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਇਆ ।
birakhahun fal fal te birakh akal kalaa kar alakh lakhaaeaa |

Creating fruit from tree and tree from fruit i.e. making disciple of the Guru and then from disciple the Guru, the Lord has laid down the mystery of His perfect imperceptible form.

ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਆਦੇਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਆਦੇਸੁ ਕਰਾਇਆ ।

The Gurus themselves bowed before the primeval Lord and made others also bow before Him.

ਪੁਰਖੁ ਪੁਰਾਤਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਓਤਪੋਤਿ ਇਕੁ ਸੂਤ੍ਰ ਬਣਾਇਆ ।

The true Guru is the primordial Lord who is pervading this creation as does a thread in the rosary.

Guru Himself is the wonder who is one with the supreme wonder.

Brahma gave four Vedas and created four vamas and four stages of life (brahmchary, grihasth, vanaprasth and sannyas).

ਛਿਅ ਦਰਸਨ ਛਿਅ ਸਾਸਤਾ ਛਿਅ ਉਪਦੇਸ ਭੇਸ ਵਰਤਾਏ ।
chhia darasan chhia saasataa chhia upades bhes varataae |

He created the six phi­losophies, their six texts. teachings and their corresponding sects.

ਚਾਰੇ ਕੁੰਡਾਂ ਦੀਪ ਸਤ ਨਉ ਖੰਡ ਦਹ ਦਿਸਿ ਵੰਡ ਵੰਡਾਏ ।
chaare kunddaan deep sat nau khandd dah dis vandd vanddaae |

He dis­tributed the whole world into the four corners, seven continents, nine divi­sions and ten directions.

ਜਲ ਥਲ ਵਣ ਖੰਡ ਪਰਬਤਾਂ ਤੀਰਥ ਦੇਵ ਸਥਾਨ ਬਣਾਏ ।

Water, earth, forests, mountains, pilgrimage cen­tres and the abodes of gods were created.

ਜਪ ਤਪ ਸੰਜਮ ਹੋਮ ਜਗ ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਕਰਿ ਦਾਨ ਕਰਾਏ ।
jap tap sanjam hom jag karam dharam kar daan karaae |

He made the traditions of recitations, ascetic discipline, continence, burnt offerings, rituals, worships, char­ity etc.

ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਦਸੈ ਨ ਦਸਾਏ ।
nirankaar na pachhaaniaa saadhasangat dasai na dasaae |

None has identified the formless Lord, because only holy congre­gation explains about the Lord but none goes there to ask about Him.

ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਆਖਣੁ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਏ ।੧੪।

People talk and hear about Him only on the basis of heresay (no one moves on the way of experience).

He created two factions of gods and demons and out of them he helped the gods win and caused the defeat of demons.

ਮਛ ਕਛ ਵੈਰਾਹ ਰੂਪ ਨਰਸਿੰਘ ਬਾਵਨ ਬੌਧ ਉਪਾਏ ।
machh kachh vairaah roop narasingh baavan bauadh upaae |

He created incarnations in the forms of Fish, Tortoise, Varah (Boar), Narsingh (Man-lion), Vaman (Dwarf) and the Buddh.

ਪਰਸਰਾਮੁ ਰਾਮ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨੁ ਹੋਇ ਕਿਲਕ ਕਲੰਕੀ ਨਾਉ ਗਣਾਏ ।

The names of Pars'u Ram, Ram, Krsna, Kalki are also counted among his incarnations.

ਚੰਚਲ ਚਲਿਤ ਪਖੰਡ ਬਹੁ ਵਲ ਛਲ ਕਰਿ ਪਰਪੰਚ ਵਧਾਏ ।
chanchal chalit pakhandd bahu val chhal kar parapanch vadhaae |

Through their deceptive and frolicsome characters, they increased delusions, deceits and convolutions.

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪੂਰਨ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਨ ਦਿਖਾਏ ।
paarabraham pooran braham nirbhau nirankaar na dikhaae |

Nothing was done to have the glimpse of fearless, formless, transcendent, perfect Brahm. Ksatriyas were annihilated

ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ਮਾਰਿ ਸੰਘਾਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਮਾਯਣ ਮਹਾਭਾਰਤ ਭਾਏ ।

And the Ramayan and the Mahabharat epics were composed to please the people.

ਕਾਮ ਕਰੋਧੁ ਨ ਮਾਰਿਓ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਏ ।
kaam karodh na maario lobh mohu ahankaar na jaae |

Lust and anger were not deci­mated, nor greed,infatuation and ego were wiped out.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਣੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਏ ।੧੫।

Without the holy congregation, the human birth was lost in vain.

ਇਕ ਦੂ ਗਿਆਰਹ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਹੋਇ ਘਰਬਾਰੀ ਅਉਧੂਤੁ ਸਦਾਇਆ ।
eik doo giaarah rudr hoe gharabaaree aaudhoot sadaaeaa |

From one there became eleven Rudrs (Sivas).Even being a householder he was called a recluse.

ਜਤੀ ਸਤੀ ਸੰਤੋਖੀਆਂ ਸਿਧ ਨਾਥ ਕਰਿ ਪਰਚਾ ਲਾਇਆ ।
jatee satee santokheean sidh naath kar parachaa laaeaa |

He loved celebates, followers of truth, contented ones, Siddhs (the proven ones) and naths, controllers of senses.

ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਦਸ ਨਾਂਵ ਧਰਿ ਜੋਗੀ ਬਾਰਹ ਪੰਥ ਚਲਾਇਆ ।
saniaasee das naanv dhar jogee baarah panth chalaaeaa |

Sannyasis adopted ten names and yogis also promulgated their twelve sects.

ਰਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਨਿਧਿ ਰਸਾਇਣਾਂ ਤੰਤ ਮੰਤ ਚੇਟਕ ਵਰਤਾਇਆ ।
ridh sidh nidh rasaaeinaan tant mant chettak varataaeaa |

Riddhi, siddhis (miraculous powers), treasures, rasciree (chemical elixir), tantra, mantra and conjurations were introduced.

ਮੇਲਾ ਕਰਿ ਸਿਵਰਾਤ ਦਾ ਕਰਾਮਾਤ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਾਦੁ ਵਧਾਇਆ ।
melaa kar sivaraat daa karaamaat vich vaad vadhaaeaa |

Sivaratri was celebrated as a fair and it increased the debates and the use of miraculous powers.

ਪੋਸਤ ਭੰਗ ਸਰਾਬ ਦਾ ਚਲੈ ਪਿਆਲਾ ਭੁਗਤ ਭੁੰਚਾਇਆ ।
posat bhang saraab daa chalai piaalaa bhugat bhunchaaeaa |

The cups of hemp, opium and wine were consumed and enjoyed.

ਵਜਨਿ ਬੁਰਗੂ ਸਿੰਙੀਆਂ ਸੰਖ ਨਾਦ ਰਹਰਾਸਿ ਕਰਾਇਆ ।
vajan buragoo singeean sankh naad raharaas karaaeaa |

Rules for blowing instruments, like singe - and the conch were set.

ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਆਦੇਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਅਲਖੁ ਜਗਾਇਨ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਇਆ ।

The primal Lord was saluted and invoked with the shouts of Alakh (the Imperceptible) but no one had perceived the Alakh.

Without holy congregation all remained duped by delusions.

ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਆਕਾਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ।
nirankaar aakaar kar satigur guraan guroo abinaasee |

The formless One has assumed form as the true Guru (Nanak Dev) who is the eternal Guru of the Gurus.

ਪੀਰਾਂ ਪੀਰੁ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ ਨਾਥਾਂ ਨਾਥੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਵਾਸੀ ।
peeraan peer vakhaaneeai naathaan naath saadhasang vaasee |

He is known as the pir of pirs(Muslim spiritualists) and that Master of masters resides in the holy congregation.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪੰਥੁ ਚਲਾਇਆ ਗੁਰਸਿਖੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚਿ ਉਦਾਸੀ ।
guramukh panth chalaaeaa gurasikh maaeaa vich udaasee |

He promulgated gurmukh panth, the way of Gurmukhs, and the Sikhs of the Guru remain detached even in maya.

ਸਨਮੁਖਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਪੰਚ ਆਖੀਅਨਿ ਬਿਰਦੁ ਪੰਚ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰੁ ਪਾਸੀ ।
sanamukh mil panch aakheean birad panch paramesur paasee |

Those present themselves before the Guru are known as panches (the eminent ones) and the reputation of such panches is protected by the Lord.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਪਰਵਾਣ ਪੰਚ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਚ ਖੰਡ ਬਿਲਾਸੀ ।
guramukh mil paravaan panch saadhasangat sach khandd bilaasee |

Meeting the Gurmukhs such panches get accepted and move happily in the holy congregation, the abode of truth.

ਗੁਰ ਦਰਸਨ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਹੈ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਰਹਰਾਸੀ ।
gur darasan gur sabad hai nij ghar bhaae bhagat raharaasee |

The word of the Guru is the glimpse of the Guru and getting settled in one's own self, the discipline of loving devotion is observed.

ਮਿਠਾ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਨਿਵ ਚਲਣੁ ਖਟਿ ਖਵਾਲਣੁ ਆਸ ਨਿਰਾਸੀ ।
mitthaa bolan niv chalan khatt khavaalan aas niraasee |

This discipline consists in sweet speech, humble conduct, honest labour, hospitality and in remaining detached among hopes and disappointments.

ਸਦਾ ਸਹਜੁ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ਹੈ ਕਲੀ ਕਾਲ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਰਗਾਸੀ ।
sadaa sahaj bairaag hai kalee kaal andar paragaasee |

Living in equi­poise and indifference is true renunciation in the Kaliyug, the dark age.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਬੰਦ ਖਲਾਸੀ ।੧੭।

Meeting the holy congregation only, one gets liberated from the cycle of transmigration

ਨਾਰੀ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਹੈ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰੇਂਦਾ ਨਾਰੀ ।

Woman loves man and man also loves his woman (wife).

ਨਾਰਿ ਭਤਾਰੁ ਸੰਜੋਗ ਮਿਲਿ ਪੁਤ ਸੁਪੁਤੁ ਕੁਪੁਤੁ ਸੈਂਸਾਰੀ ।
naar bhataar sanjog mil put suput kuput sainsaaree |

By the union of husband and wife, in this world sons, worthy and unworthy are born.

ਪੁਰਖ ਪੁਰਖਾਂ ਜੋ ਰਚਨਿ ਤੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ ।
purakh purakhaan jo rachan te virale niramal nirankaaree |

Those who remain absorbed in the Lord God, the male of all the males, are rare pure ones.

ਪੁਰਖਹੁਂ ਪੁਰਖ ਉਪਜਦਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਤੇ ਚੇਲਾ ਸਬਦ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ।
purakhahun purakh upajadaa gur te chelaa sabad veechaaree |

From the primeval Lord, the male (the creative principle) is produced in the same way as by reflection, upon the Word, the true disciple of the Guru is created.

ਪਾਰਸ ਹੋਆ ਪਾਰਸਹੁਂ ਗੁਰੁ ਚੇਲਾ ਚੇਲਾ ਗੁਣਕਾਰੀ ।
paaras hoaa paarasahun gur chelaa chelaa gunakaaree |

Philosopher's stone produces another philosopher's stone i.e. from Guru emerges disciple and the same disciple eventually becomes a virtuous Guru.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵੰਸੀ ਪਰਮ ਹੰਸ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਸਾਧ ਸੇ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰੀ ।
guramukh vansee param hans gurasikh saadh se praupakaaree |

The gurmukhs belong to the lineage of the super swans i.e. they are most sacred. The Sikhs of Guru are benevolent like sadhus.

ਗੁਰਭਾਈ ਗੁਰਭਾਈਆਂ ਸਾਕ ਸਚਾ ਗੁਰ ਵਾਕ ਜੁਹਾਰੀ ।
gurabhaaee gurabhaaeean saak sachaa gur vaak juhaaree |

The Guru's disciple keeps fraternal relationship with fellow disci­ples and they salute one another with the word of the Guru.

ਪਰ ਤਨੁ ਪਰ ਧਨੁ ਪਰਹਰੇ ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਪਰਹਾਰੀ ।
par tan par dhan parahare par nindaa haumai parahaaree |

They have renounced other's body, other's wealth, slander and ego.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਟਹੁਂ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ।੧੮।

I am sacrifice unto such holy congregation (which brings about such transformation).

ਪਿਉ ਦਾਦਾ ਪੜਦਾਦਿਅਹੁਂ ਪੁਤ ਪੋਤਾ ਪੜਪੋਤਾ ਨਤਾ ।

From father, grand father, great grand father are born son, grand son,great grand son respectively and from great grand son is born simply a relative (natte, having no specific relational name).

ਮਾਂ ਦਾਦੀ ਪੜਦਾਦੀਅਹੁਂ ਫੁਫੀ ਭੈਣ ਧੀਅ ਸਣਖਤਾ ।
maan daadee parradaadeeahun fufee bhain dheea sanakhataa |

The relationship of mother, grand mother, greatgrand mother, father's sister, sister, daughter, and daughter-in-law is also respected.

ਨਾਨਾ ਨਾਨੀ ਆਖੀਐ ਪੜਨਾਨਾ ਪੜਨਾਨੀ ਪਤਾ ।
naanaa naanee aakheeai parranaanaa parranaanee pataa |

Maternal grand father and mother and maternal great grand father and mother are also known.

ਤਾਇਆ ਚਾਚਾ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਤਾਈ ਚਾਚੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਤਾ ।
taaeaa chaachaa jaaneeai taaee chaachee maaeaa mataa |

Father's elder brother (Taiya) younger brother (chachc7a, their wives (tayi, chachi)et al. also remain absorbed in wordly affairs (maya).

ਮਾਮੇ ਤੈ ਮਾਮਾਣੀਆਂ ਮਾਸੀ ਮਾਸੜ ਦੈ ਰੰਗ ਰਤਾ ।
maame tai maamaaneean maasee maasarr dai rang rataa |

Mama, mann- (mother's brother and his wife), mast; masa; (mother's sister and her husband), all look dyed in their own colours.

ਮਾਸੜ ਫੁਫੜ ਸਾਕ ਸਭ ਸਹੁਰਾ ਸਸ ਸਾਲੀ ਸਾਲਤਾ ।
maasarr fufarr saak sabh sahuraa sas saalee saalataa |

Masar, phuphet (mother's sister's husband and father's sister's husband respectively), father-in-law, mother-in-law, sister-in-law (sali) and brother-in-law (sala) are also close.

ਤਾਏਰ ਪਿਤੀਏਰ ਮੇਲੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਮਉਲੇਰ ਫੁਫੇਰ ਅਵਤਾ ।
taaer piteer mel mil mauler fufer avataa |

The relationship of chacha's-in-law and those of the mama-in-law and phaphd-in-law are known as inconvenient relations.

ਸਾਢੂ ਕੁੜਮੁ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਸਭ ਨਦੀ ਨਾਵ ਸੰਜੋਗ ਨਿਸਤਾ ।
saadtoo kurram kuttanb sabh nadee naav sanjog nisataa |

The relation­ship of sister-in-law's husband (Sandhi) and father-in-law of your daughter or son (Kuram) are momentary and fake like those passengers of a boat sitting in a group.

ਸਚਾ ਸਾਕ ਨ ਵਿਛੜੈ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਗੁਰਭਾਈ ਭਤਾ ।
sachaa saak na vichharrai saadhasangat gurabhaaee bhataa |

The true relationship is with those brothers who meet in the holy congregation.They never get separated.

ਭੋਗ ਭੁਗਤਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਾ ।੧੯।
bhog bhugat vich jog jugataa |19|

Through the holy congrega­tion, the gurmukhs learn the technique of renunciation amidst enjoyments.

ਪੀਉ ਦੇ ਨਾਂਹ ਪਿਆਰ ਤੁਲਿ ਨਾ ਫੁਫੀ ਨਾ ਪਿਤੀਏ ਤਾਏ ।

The love of father's sister or cousins are not equal to the father's love.

ਮਾਊ ਹੇਤੁ ਨ ਪੁਜਨੀ ਹੇਤੁ ਨ ਮਾਮੇ ਮਾਸੀ ਜਾਏ ।
maaoo het na pujanee het na maame maasee jaae |

Love of mother cannot be equalled by the love of the children of maternal uncle and mother's sister.

ਅੰਬਾਂ ਸਧਰ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਆਣਿ ਅੰਬਾਕੜੀਆਂ ਜੇ ਖਾਏ ।
anbaan sadhar na utarai aan anbaakarreean je khaae |

By eating mango blossms the desire for eating mangoes is not fulfilled.

ਮੂਲੀ ਪਾਨ ਪਟੰਤਰਾ ਵਾਸੁ ਡਿਕਾਰੁ ਪਰਗਟੀਆਏ ।
moolee paan pattantaraa vaas ddikaar paragatteeae |

The smells of radish leaves and betel are differ­ent and are identified through smell and eructation.

ਸੂਰਜ ਚੰਦ ਨ ਪੁਜਨੀ ਦੀਵੇ ਲਖ ਤਾਰੇ ਚਮਕਾਏ ।
sooraj chand na pujanee deeve lakh taare chamakaae |

Lacs of lighted lamps and stars cannot compete with the sun and the moon.

ਰੰਗ ਮਜੀਠ ਕੁਸੁੰਭ ਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਸਥੋਈ ਵੇਸੁ ਵਟਾਏ ।
rang majeetth kusunbh daa sadaa sathoee ves vattaae |

The colour of madder is steadfast and the colour of safflower changes very soon.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਤੁਲਿ ਨ ਮਿਹਰਵਾਨ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਨ ਦੇਵ ਸਬਾਏ ।
satigur tul na miharavaan maat pitaa na dev sabaae |

Neither mother and father nor all the gods can be as gracious as the true Guru.

ਡਿਠੇ ਸਭੇ ਠੋਕਿ ਵਜਾਏ ।੨੦।

All these relations have been thoroughly tested.

ਮਾਪੇ ਹੇਤੁ ਨ ਪੁਜਨੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹੇਤੁ ਸੁਚੇਤ ਸਹਾਈ ।

Love of parents cannot be equal to the love of the true Guru, the bestower of consciousness.

ਸਾਹ ਵਿਸਾਹ ਨ ਪੁਜਨੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਾਹੁ ਅਥਾਹੁ ਸਮਾਈ ।
saah visaah na pujanee satigur saahu athaahu samaaee |

Trust in the bankers cannot match the reliance upon the true Guru who has boundless capacity.

ਸਾਹਿਬ ਤੁਲਿ ਨ ਸਾਹਿਬੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਚਾ ਸਾਈਂ ।
saahib tul na saahibee satigur saahib sachaa saaeen |

Of none's lordship is equal to the Lordship of true Guru. That true Guru is the real master.

ਦਾਤੇ ਦਾਤਿ ਨ ਪੁਜਨੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਚੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਈ ।
daate daat na pujanee satigur daataa sach drirraaee |

The charities given by others cannot be equal to the charities bestowed by the true Guru because the true Guru bestows steadfastness in the truth.

ਵੈਦ ਨ ਪੁਜਨਿ ਵੈਦਗੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਉਮੈ ਰੋਗ ਮਿਟਾਈ ।
vaid na pujan vaidagee satigur haumai rog mittaaee |

The treatment of the physicians cannot reach the true physician's treatment because the true Guru cures the disease of egoism.

ਦੇਵੀ ਦੇਵ ਨ ਸੇਵ ਤੁਲਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਈ ।
devee dev na sev tul satigur sev sadaa sukhadaaee |

Worship of gods and goddesses is also not equal to the constant pleasure-giving worship of the true Guru.

ਸਾਇਰ ਰਤਨ ਨ ਪੁਜਨੀ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਭਾਈ ।
saaeir ratan na pujanee saadhasangat gur sabad subhaaee |

Even jewels of ocean cannot be equated with the holy congregation because the holy congregation is adorned by the word of Guru.

ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਵਡੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ।੨੧।੩੯। ਉਣਤਾਲੀ ।
akath kathaa vaddee vaddiaaee |21|39| unataalee |

Ineffable is the story o, the grandeur of the true Guru; his glory is great.
