ਸਭ ਦੂੰ ਨੀਵੀਂ ਧਰਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਦਰਗਹ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਮਿਲੀ ਵਡਾਈ ।
sabh doon neeveen dharat hoe daragah andar milee vaddaaee |

The earth is most humble and hence respected in the court of the Lord.

ਕੋਈ ਗੋਡੈ ਵਾਹਿ ਹਲੁ ਕੋ ਮਲ ਮੂਤ੍ਰ ਕੁਸੂਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਾਈ ।
koee goddai vaeh hal ko mal mootr kusootr karaaee |

One hoes it, other ploughs it and someone impures it by defecating it.

ਲਿੰਬਿ ਰਸੋਈ ਕੋ ਕਰੈ ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਪੂਜਿ ਚੜਾਈ ।
linb rasoee ko karai choaa chandan pooj charraaee |

Plastering it one prepares kitchen over it and someone worships it by offering sandal sticks.

ਜੇਹਾ ਬੀਜੈ ਸੋ ਲੁਣੈ ਜੇਹਾ ਬੀਉ ਤੇਹਾ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਈ ।
jehaa beejai so lunai jehaa beeo tehaa fal paaee |

One reaps what one sows and receives the fruit of seeds offered to earth.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲ ਸਹਜ ਘਰੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ਨ ਆਪੁ ਗਣਾਈ ।
guramukh sukh fal sahaj ghar aap gavaae na aap ganaaee |

Getting stabilised in the innate nature gurmukhs receive the pleasure-fruits. Eschewing ego they never allow themselves to be counted anywhere.

ਜਾਗ੍ਰਤ ਸੁਪਨ ਸੁਖੋਪਤੀ ਉਨਮਨਿ ਮਗਨ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ।
jaagrat supan sukhopatee unaman magan rahai liv laaee |

They, in all the four stages - jagrat (conscious) svapan (dream), susupati (deep sleep or trance) and turiya (indetical with the supreme lord) - remain merged in the love of the Lord.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਈ ।੧।

One accomplishes the word of the Guru in the company of saints.

ਧਰਤੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਜਲੁ ਵਸੈ ਜਲੁ ਬਹੁ ਰੰਗੀਂ ਰਸੀਂ ਮਿਲੰਦਾ ।

Water resides in the earth and mixes with all colours and saps.

ਜਿਉਂ ਜਿਉਂ ਕੋਇ ਚਲਾਇਦਾ ਨੀਵਾਂ ਹੋਇ ਨੀਵਾਣਿ ਚਲੰਦਾ ।
jiaun jiaun koe chalaaeidaa neevaan hoe neevaan chalandaa |

As somebody goes on pushing it, it goes down and down.

ਧੁਪੈ ਤਤਾ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਛਾਵੈਂ ਠੰਢਾ ਹੋਇ ਰਹੰਦਾ ।
dhupai tataa hoe kai chhaavain tthandtaa hoe rahandaa |

It remains hot in sunshine and cold in the shade.

ਨਾਵਣੁ ਜੀਵਦਿਆਂ ਮੁਇਆਂ ਪੀਤੈ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਹੋਵੰਦਾ ।

Bathing, living, dying, drinking it always gives peace and satisfaction.

ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਕਰਦਾ ਮੈਲਿਆਂ ਨੀਵੈਂ ਸਰਵਰ ਜਾਇ ਟਿਕੰਦਾ ।
niramal karadaa mailiaan neevain saravar jaae ttikandaa |

It makes impure ones pure and remains undisturbed in the lower tanks.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਭਾਉ ਭਉ ਸਹਜੁ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ਸਦਾ ਵਿਗਸੰਦਾ ।
guramukh sukh fal bhaau bhau sahaj bairaag sadaa vigasandaa |

Similarly, the gurmukh person in the love and fear of the Lord and observing indifference, full of equipoise remains delighted.

Only perfect one undertakes altruism.

ਜਲ ਵਿਚਿ ਕਵਲੁ ਅਲਿਪਤੁ ਹੈ ਸੰਗ ਦੋਖ ਨਿਰਦੋਖ ਰਹੰਦਾ ।
jal vich kaval alipat hai sang dokh niradokh rahandaa |

The lotus residing in water remains unsmeared by it.

ਰਾਤੀ ਭਵਰੁ ਲੁਭਾਇਦਾ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਹੋਇ ਸੁਗੰਧਿ ਮਿਲੰਦਾ ।
raatee bhavar lubhaaeidaa seetal hoe sugandh milandaa |

In the night it attracts the black bee which gets coolness and fragrance from lotus.

ਭਲਕੇ ਸੂਰਜ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਧਰਿ ਪਰਫੁਲਤੁ ਹੋਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਹਸੰਦਾ ।
bhalake sooraj dhiaan dhar parafulat hoe milai hasandaa |

In the morning it again meets the sun and being glad smiles the whole day.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਫਲ ਸਹਜਿ ਘਰਿ ਵਰਤਮਾਨ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਵਰਤੰਦਾ ।
guramukh sukh fal sahaj ghar varatamaan andar varatandaa |

Gurmukhs (like lotus) reside in the innate house of pleasure fruit and utilise the present time fully i.e. they don't sit idle.

ਲੋਕਾਚਾਰੀ ਲੋਕ ਵਿਚਿ ਵੇਦ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੰਦਾ ।
lokaachaaree lok vich ved veechaaree karam karandaa |

To the ordinary people busy in mundane affairs they look engrossed in the world, and, to the people pondering over Vedas they look engaged in rituals.

ਸਾਵਧਾਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨ ਵਿਚਿ ਜੀਵਨਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਵਿਚਰੰਦਾ ।
saavadhaan gur giaan vich jeevan mukat jugat vicharandaa |

But these gurmukhs, as a result of attaining knowledge from the Guru, keep consciousness in their possession and move in the world as liberated ones.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਸੰਦਾ ।੩।

In the congregation of the holy person resides the Guru-word.

ਧਰਤੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਹੋਇ ਪਹਿਲੋਂ ਦੇ ਜੜ ਪੈਰ ਟਿਕਾਈ ।

Tree grows on earth and first of all it sets its feet into the earth.

ਉਪਰਿ ਝੂਲੈ ਝਟੁਲਾ ਠੰਢੀ ਛਾਉਂ ਸੁ ਥਾਉਂ ਸੁਹਾਈ ।
aupar jhoolai jhattulaa tthandtee chhaaun su thaaun suhaaee |

People enjoy swinging over it and its cool shade adorns places.

ਪਵਣੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਪਾਲਾ ਸਹੈ ਸਿਰ ਤਲਵਾਇਆ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਜਾਈ ।
pavan paanee paalaa sahai sir talavaaeaa nihachal jaaee |

It bears the impact of air, water and cold but still keeping its head inverse, it remains steadfast at its place.

ਫਲੁ ਦੇ ਵਟ ਵਗਾਇਆਂ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਲਵਤੁ ਲੈ ਲੋਹੁ ਤਰਾਈ ।

When stoned, it gives fruit and even getting cut with the sawing machine it takes iron (in boats) across waters.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਕਾਰਥਾ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰੀ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਈ ।
guramukh janam sakaarathaa praupakaaree sahaj subhaaee |

Life of gurmukhs is useful because by their natural temperament they are altruists.

ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਨ ਸਤ੍ਰੁ ਨ ਮੋਹੁ ਧ੍ਰੋਹੁ ਸਮਦਰਸੀ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਈ ।
mitr na satru na mohu dhrohu samadarasee gur sabad samaaee |

They have no friend or foe. Away from infatuation and delusion they are unbiased and immersed in the word of the Guru.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ।੪।

Their grandness they attain through the wisdom of the Guru and the company of the holy persons.

ਸਾਗਰ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਬੋਹਿਥਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਮੁਹਾਣਾ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰੀ ।

The vessel is in the ocean and there is a benevolent sailor in it.

ਭਾਰ ਅਥਰਬਣ ਲਦੀਐ ਲੈ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ਚੜ੍ਹਨਿ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ।
bhaar atharaban ladeeai lai vaapaar charrhan vaapaaree |

The vessel is amply loaded and the traders get boarded thereon.

ਸਾਇਰ ਲਹਰ ਨ ਵਿਆਪਈ ਅਤਿ ਅਸਗਾਹ ਅਥਾਹ ਅਪਾਰੀ ।
saaeir lahar na viaapee at asagaah athaah apaaree |

Waves of impassable ocean put no impact upon any one.

ਬਹਲੇ ਪੂਰ ਲੰਘਾਇਦਾ ਸਹੀ ਸਲਾਮਤਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੀ ।
bahale poor langhaaeidaa sahee salaamat paar utaaree |

That boatman takes the passengers across safe, dale and hearty. Those traders earn profits two or four times and gain in many ways.

ਦੂਣੇ ਚਉਣੇ ਦੰਮ ਹੋਨ ਲਾਹਾ ਲੈ ਲੈ ਕਾਜ ਸਵਾਰੀ ।
doone chaune dam hon laahaa lai lai kaaj savaaree |

Gurmukhs in the form of boatmen make people board the ship of holy congregation and take them across the impassable world-ocean.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਭਵਜਲ ਅੰਦਰ ਦੁਤਰੁ ਤਾਰੀ ।

Any liberated one alone can understand the mystery of the technique of the formless Lord.

ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ ।੫।

Plant of sandal be becoming tree lives in the deep forests.

ਬਾਵਨ ਚੰਦਨ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਹੋਇ ਵਣਖੰਡ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਵਸੈ ਉਜਾੜੀ ।

Being near the vegetation, it keeps its head down and remains engrossed in meditation.

ਪਾਸਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ਵਣਾਸਪਤਿ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਲਾਇ ਉਰਧ ਤਪ ਤਾੜੀ ।
paas nivaas vanaasapat nihachal laae uradh tap taarree |

Getting attached to the moving breeze it spreads the superfine fragrance.

ਪਵਨ ਗਵਨ ਸਨਬੰਧੁ ਕਰਿ ਗੰਧ ਸੁਗੰਧ ਉਲਾਸ ਉਘਾੜੀ ।
pavan gavan sanabandh kar gandh sugandh ulaas ughaarree |

Whether with fruit or without fruit, all the trees are made fragrant by sandal tree.

ਅਫਲ ਸਫਲ ਸਮਦਰਸ ਹੋਇ ਕਰੇ ਵਣਸਪਤਿ ਚੰਦਨ ਵਾੜੀ ।

The pleasure fruit of gurmukhs is the company of holy persons, which purifies the impure ones even in one day (sitting).

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗੁ ਪਤਿਤ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਕਰੈ ਦੇਹਾੜੀ ।

It fills the evil persons with virtues and in its fold the people of fragile character become strong and firm.

ਅਉਗੁਣ ਕੀਤੇ ਗੁਣ ਕਰੈ ਕਚ ਪਕਾਈ ਉਪਰਿ ਵਾੜੀ ।

Neither water can drown nor fire can burn such people i.e. they go across the World Ocean and the flames of desires cannot reach them.

ਰਾਤਿ ਅਨ੍ਹੇਰੀ ਅੰਧਕਾਰੁ ਲਖ ਕਰੋੜੀ ਚਮਕਨ ਤਾਰੇ ।

In the dark night myriad stars shine.

ਘਰ ਘਰ ਦੀਵੇ ਬਾਲੀਅਨਿ ਪਰ ਘਰ ਤਕਨਿ ਚੋਰ ਚਗਾਰੇ ।
ghar ghar deeve baaleean par ghar takan chor chagaare |

The houses are lit by lighting the lamps but still the thieves also roam about for the purpose of stealing.

ਹਟ ਪਟਣ ਘਰਬਾਰੀਆ ਦੇ ਦੇ ਤਾਕ ਸਵਨਿ ਨਰ ਨਾਰੇ ।
hatt pattan gharabaareea de de taak savan nar naare |

The householders shut the doors of their homes and shops before they go to sleep.

ਸੂਰਜ ਜੋਤਿ ਉਦੋਤੁ ਕਰਿ ਤਾਰੇ ਤਾਰਿ ਅਨ੍ਹੇਰ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ।
sooraj jot udot kar taare taar anher nivaare |

The sun with its light dispels the darkness of night.

ਬੰਧਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਰਾਇਦਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਵਿਚਾਰੇ ।
bandhan mukat karaaeidaa naam daan isanaan vichaare |

Likewise the gurmukh making people understand the importance of nam (meditation), dan (charity), and isnan (ablution) sets them free from the bondage (of life and death).

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗੁ ਪਸੂ ਪਰੇਤ ਪਤਿਤ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ।

The pleasure fruit of gurmukhs is the company of holy persons through which animals, ghosts and the fallen ones are salvaged and liberated.

Such beneficent persons are dear to the Guru.

It is said that on Manasarovar (lake) resides swans of the highest breed.

ਮੋਤੀ ਮਾਣਕ ਮਾਨਸਰਿ ਚੁਣਿ ਚੁਣਿ ਹੰਸ ਅਮੋਲ ਚੁਗੰਦੇ ।
motee maanak maanasar chun chun hans amol chugande |

In the Manasarovar are pearls and rubies and there invaluable jewels are picked up by swans to eat.

ਖੀਰੁ ਨੀਰੁ ਨਿਰਵਾਰਦੇ ਲਹਰੀਂ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਫਿਰਨਿ ਤਰੰਦੇ ।
kheer neer niravaarade lahareen andar firan tarande |

These swans separate water from milk and go on floating on the waves.

ਮਾਨ ਸਰੋਵਰੁ ਛਡਿ ਕੈ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਬਹੰਦੇ ।
maan sarovar chhadd kai horat thaae na jaae bahande |

Leaving Manasarovar, they go nowhere to sit or reside.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗੁ ਪਰਮ ਹੰਸ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਸੁੋਹੰਦੇ ।

The pleasure fruit of gurmukhs is the congregation of holy persons wherein gurmukhs in the form of superior swans adorn the place.

ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ਇਕੁ ਧਿਆਇਦੇ ਦੂਜੇ ਭਾਇ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਫਿਰੰਦੇ ।
eik man ik dhiaaeide dooje bhaae na jaae firande |

With single-minded devotion they concentrate upon the Lord and do not go astray to any other thought.

ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਲਿਵ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖੰਦੇ ।੮।

Merging their consciousness into the Word they behold that imperceptible Lord.

ਪਾਰਸੁ ਪਥਰੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਲੁਕਿਆ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਆਪੁ ਜਣਾਏ ।

Philosopher's stone remains hidden and does not publicise itself.

ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋਇ ਸਿਞਾਣਦਾ ਖੋਜੀ ਖੋਜਿ ਲਏ ਸੋ ਪਾਏ ।
viralaa koe siyaanadaa khojee khoj le so paae |

Any rare one identifies it and only a prospector gets it.

ਪਾਰਸੁ ਪਰਸਿ ਅਪਰਸੁ ਹੋਇ ਅਸਟ ਧਾਤੁ ਇਕ ਧਾਤੁ ਕਰਾਏ ।
paaras paras aparas hoe asatt dhaat ik dhaat karaae |

Touching that stone, the lowly metals transform into one metal, gold.

ਬਾਰਹ ਵੰਨੀ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਮੁਲਿ ਅਮੁਲਿ ਵਿਕਾਏ ।
baarah vanee hoe kai kanchan mul amul vikaae |

Becoming pure gold those metals are sold as invaluable ones.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲ ਸਾਧਸੰਗੁ ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਲਿਵ ਅਘੜ ਘੜਾਏ ।

The pleasure fruit of gurmukhs is the holy congregation where merging consciousness into Word, the clumsy mind is chiselled into beautiful shape.

ਚਰਣਿ ਸਰਣਿ ਲਿਵ ਲੀਣੁ ਹੋਇ ਸੈਂਸਾਰੀ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ ਭਾਏ ।
charan saran liv leen hoe sainsaaree nirankaaree bhaae |

Even a worldly person here, concentrating upon the feet of Guru, becomes dear to God, the formless One.

ਘਰਿ ਬਾਰੀ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਏ ।੯।

Becoming householder, man resides in his innate nature (atman).

ਚਿੰਤਾਮਣਿ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਹਰੈ ਕਾਮਧੇਨੁ ਕਾਮਨਾਂ ਪੁਜਾਏ ।
chintaaman chintaa harai kaamadhen kaamanaan pujaae |

Chintamani alleviates anxieties and wish-fulfilling cow (kamadhena) fulfils all desires.

ਫਲ ਫੁਲਿ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਪਾਰਜਾਤੁ ਰਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਨਵ ਨਾਥ ਲੁਭਾਏ ।
fal ful dendaa paarajaat ridh sidh nav naath lubhaae |

Parijat tree gives flowers and fruits and the nine naths are engrossed with the miraculous powers.

ਦਸ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਅਕਾਰ ਕਰਿ ਪੁਰਖਾਰਥ ਕਰਿ ਨਾਂਵ ਗਣਾਏ ।

The ten incarnations (of Hindu mythology) assumed human body and showed their valour to spread their names.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗੁ ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਸੇਵਾ ਲਾਏ ।

The pleasure fruit of the gurmukhs is the holy congregation wherein all the four ideals of life (dharma, arth, kam and moks) serve themselves.

ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਲਿਵ ਪਿਰਮ ਰਸੁ ਅਕਥ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਕਥੀ ਨ ਜਾਏ ।
sabad surat liv piram ras akath kahaanee kathee na jaae |

The consciousness of gurmukhs there remains merged in the Word and the story of their love is ineffable.

The transcendental Brahm is the perfect Brahm who by becoming affectionate to devotees puts many deceitful persons in the web of deception.

The Lord is free from all accounts and none can understand His mystery.

ਇਕੁ ਕਵਾਉ ਪਸਾਉ ਕਰਿ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰਿ ਆਕਾਰੁ ਬਣਾਇਆ ।
eik kavaau pasaau kar nirankaar aakaar banaaeaa |

With a single Word that formless Lord created the whole world.

ਤੋਲਿ ਅਤੋਲੁ ਨ ਤੋਲੀਐ ਤੁਲਿ ਨ ਤੁਲਾਧਾਰਿ ਤੋਲਾਇਆ ।
tol atol na toleeai tul na tulaadhaar tolaaeaa |

Extension of the Lord (this world) can in no way be measured.

ਲੇਖ ਅਲੇਖੁ ਨ ਲਿਖੀਐ ਅੰਗੁ ਨ ਅਖਰੁ ਲੇਖ ਲਿਖਾਇਆ ।
lekh alekh na likheeai ang na akhar lekh likhaaeaa |

By no account this world can be understood because all numerals and letters come to an end for this.

ਮੁਲਿ ਅਮੁਲੁ ਨ ਮੋਲੀਐ ਲਖੁ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਲਵੈ ਨ ਲਾਇਆ ।
mul amul na moleeai lakh padaarath lavai na laaeaa |

Myriad kinds of its materials are invaluable; their price cannot be fixed.

ਬੋਲਿ ਅਬੋਲੁ ਨ ਬੋਲੀਐ ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਆਖਣੁ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ ।
bol abol na boleeai sun sun aakhan aakh sunaaeaa |

Even through speech, nothing can be said and heard about it.

ਅਗਮੁ ਅਥਾਹੁ ਅਗਾਧਿ ਬੋਧ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ।
agam athaahu agaadh bodh ant na paaraavaar na paaeaa |

This world in unapproachable, unfathomable and full of mystery; its mystique cannot be understood.

ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕੀਮ ਨ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਕੇਵਡੁ ਕਾਦਰੁ ਕਿਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ।
kudarat keem na jaaneeai kevadd kaadar kit ghar aaeaa |

When it is impossible to understand the creation, how could its Creator's greatness and His residence be known?

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖਫਲੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਲਿਵ ਅਲਖ ਲਖਾਇਆ ।
guramukh sukhafal saadhasang sabad surat liv alakh lakhaaeaa |

The pleasure fruit of gurmukhs is the holy congregation where by merging the consciousness in the Word that invisible Lord is visualised.

In the holy congregation, the unbreakable cup of love is drunk by becoming tolerant.

ਸਾਦਹੁ ਸਬਦਹੁ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਕਿਉਂ ਜਿਹਬਾ ਜਾਣੈ ।
saadahu sabadahu baaharaa akath kathaa kiaun jihabaa jaanai |

The Lord is beyond taste and words; how can His ineffable story be told by tongue?

ਉਸਤਤਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਕਥਨੀ ਬਦਨੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਨ ਆਣੈ ।
ausatat nindaa baaharaa kathanee badanee vich na aanai |

He being beyond praise and slander does not come in the periphery of telling and hearing.

ਗੰਧ ਸਪਰਸੁ ਅਗੋਚਰਾ ਨਾਸ ਸਾਸ ਹੇਰਤਿ ਹੈਰਾਣੇ ।
gandh saparas agocharaa naas saas herat hairaane |

He is beyond smell and touch and the nose, and the breath is also wonder-struck but cannot know Him.

ਵਰਨਹੁ ਚਿਹਨਹੁ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਦਿਸਟਿ ਅਦਿਸਟਿ ਨ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਙਾਣੈ ।
varanahu chihanahu baaharaa disatt adisatt na dhiaan dhingaanai |

He is away from any varna and symbolism and is even beyond the sight of concentration.

ਨਿਰਾਲੰਬੁ ਅਵਲੰਬ ਵਿਣੁ ਧਰਤਿ ਅਗਾਸਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ਵਿਡਾਣੈ ।
niraalanb avalanb vin dharat agaas nivaas viddaanai |

Without any prop He resides in the grandeur of earth and sky.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਚਖੰਡਿ ਹੈ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਿਞਾਣੈ ।
saadhasangat sachakhandd hai nirankaar gur sabad siyaanai |

Holy congregation is the abode of truth where through the word of the Guru, the formless Lord is recognised.

ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕਾਦਰ ਨੋ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੈ ।੧੨।
kudarat kaadar no kurabaanai |12|

Whole of this creation is sacrifice unto the creator.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪੰਥੁ ਅਗੰਮ ਹੈ ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਮੀਨੁ ਚਲੰਦਾ ।
guramukh panth agam hai jiau jal andar meen chalandaa |

As the path of fish in water is unknowable, the way of gurmukhs is also unapproachable.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਖੋਜੁ ਅਲਖੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਉ ਪੰਖੀ ਆਗਾਸ ਉਡੰਦਾ ।
guramukh khoj alakh hai jiau pankhee aagaas uddandaa |

As the path of birds flying in the sky cannot be known, the thoughtful and search-orientated way of gurmukh is also imperceptible. It cannot be understood.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਰਹਰਾਸਿ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਚੰਦਉਰੀ ਨਗਰੁ ਵਸੰਦਾ ।
saadhasangat raharaas hai har chandauree nagar vasandaa |

Holy congregation is the straight path for gurmukhs and this world is full of illusions for them.

ਚਾਰਿ ਵਰਨ ਤੰਬੋਲ ਰਸੁ ਪਿਰਮ ਪਿਆਲੈ ਰੰਗੁ ਚਰੰਦਾ ।
chaar varan tanbol ras piram piaalai rang charandaa |

As the four colours of betel catechu, betelnut, lime and betel lead become one (red) colour (of joy-giving love), the gurmukhs also enjoy the cup of the Lord's love.

ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਲਿਵ ਲੀਣੁ ਹੋਇ ਚੰਦਨ ਵਾਸ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਕਰੰਦਾ ।
sabad surat liv leen hoe chandan vaas nivaas karandaa |

As the fragrance of sandal comes to reside in other plants, they merging their consciousness into Word reside in the hearts of others.

ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਣੁ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਕੂੰਜਿ ਕੂਰਮ ਹੰਸ ਵੰਸ ਵਧੰਦਾ ।
giaan dhiaan simaran jugat koonj kooram hans vans vadhandaa |

By means of knowledge, meditation and remembrance, they like cranes, tortoise and swans expand their family or tradition.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਅਲਖ ਲਖੰਦਾ ।੧੩।

The gurmukhs come face to face with God, the pleasure of all fruits.

ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾਦਿਕ ਵੇਦਾਂ ਸਣੈ ਨੇਤਿ ਨੇਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਭੇਦੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ।
brahamaadik vedaan sanai net net kar bhed na paaeaa |

Brahmas alongwith the Vedas have declared Him this is not, this is not (neti neti) and these all could not known His mystery.

ਮਹਾਦੇਵ ਅਵਧੂਤੁ ਹੋਇ ਨਮੋ ਨਮੋ ਕਰਿ ਧਿਆਨਿ ਨ ਆਇਆ ।
mahaadev avadhoot hoe namo namo kar dhiaan na aaeaa |

By becoming avadhut (a kind of superior yogi), Madadev also recited his name but his meditation could not attain him.

ਦਸ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਅਕਾਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ਨ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਇਆ ।
das avataar akaar kar ekankaar na alakh lakhaaeaa |

Ten incarnations also flourished but none could perceive ekhankar, the supreme Lord.

ਰਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਨਿਧਿ ਨਾਥ ਨਉ ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਆਦੇਸੁ ਕਰਾਇਆ ।
ridh sidh nidh naath nau aad purakh aades karaaeaa |

Nine naths, the treasures of miraculous powers, also bowed before that Lord.

ਸਹਸ ਨਾਂਵ ਲੈ ਸਹਸ ਮੁਖ ਸਿਮਰਣਿ ਸੰਖ ਨ ਨਾਉਂ ਧਿਆਇਆ ।
sahas naanv lai sahas mukh simaran sankh na naaun dhiaaeaa |

Sesang (mythical snake) with its thousand mouths remembered Him by thousands of names, but its recitation could not be accomplished.

ਲੋਮਸ ਤਪੁ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਧਨਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਸਾਧਿ ਨ ਸਾਧੁ ਸਦਾਇਆ ।
lomas tap kar saadhanaa haumai saadh na saadh sadaaeaa |

Sage Lomas rigorously undertook ascetic discipline but could not overcome his ego and could not be called a true ascetic.

ਚਿਰੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਬਹੁ ਹੰਢਣਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਫਲੁ ਪਲੁ ਨ ਚਖਾਇਆ ।
chir jeevan bahu handtanaa guramukh sukh fal pal na chakhaaeaa |

Ever-living Markandey spent a long life but could not taste the pleasure fruit of the gurmukhs.

ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ।੧੪।

All mentioned above remained deluded while living on earth.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖਫਲੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲ ਹੋਇ ਵਸਿਗਤਿ ਆਇਆ ।
guramukh sukhafal saadhasang bhagat vachhal hoe vasigat aaeaa |

The pleasure fruit of the gurmukhs is holy congregation and controlled by this holy congregation, the Lord comes here as lover of the devotees.

ਕਾਰਣੁ ਕਰਤੇ ਵਸਿ ਹੈ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਇਆ ।
kaaran karate vas hai saadhasangat vich kare karaaeaa |

All the causes are under control of the creator but in the holy congregation He does everything in accordance with the wishes of the devotees and the saints.

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪੂਰਨ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਭਾਣਾ ਭਾਇਆ ।

The transcendetal Brahm is the perfect Brahm and He likes the will of the holy congregation.

ਰੋਮ ਰੋਮ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਖਿਓਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡ ਕਰੋੜਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ।
rom rom vich rakhion kar brahamandd karorr samaaeaa |

In his every trichome are absorbed crores of universes.

ਬੀਅਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਬਿਸਥਾਰੁ ਵੜੁ ਫਲ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਬੀਉ ਵਸਾਇਆ ।
beeahu kar bisathaar varr fal andar fir beeo vasaaeaa |

From one seed comes out banyan tree and in its fruits again the seeds reside.

ਅਪਿਉ ਪੀਅਣੁ ਅਜਰ ਜਰਣੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ਨ ਆਪੁ ਜਣਾਇਆ ।
apiau peean ajar jaran aap gavaae na aap janaaeaa |

Who quaffing the nectar have devotedly adopted the unbearable in their mind, the eschewing their ego have never made themselves noticed.

ਅੰਜਨੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ।੧੫।

Such true persons while being amidst maya have attained that immaculate Lord.

ਮਹਿਮਾ ਮਹਿ ਮਹਿਕਾਰ ਵਿਚਿ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਲਖ ਨ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਜਾਣੈ ।
mahimaa meh mahikaar vich mahimaa lakh na mahimaa jaanai |

Even the people spreading the fragrance of His grandeur don’t understand the real nature of His greatness.

ਲਖ ਮਹਾਤਮ ਮਹਾਤਮਾ ਤਿਲ ਨ ਮਹਾਤਮੁ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੈ ।
lakh mahaatam mahaatamaa til na mahaatam aakh vakhaanai |

Lakhs of saint explain the gist and significance of that Lord but even all joined could not put forth even a fraction of His grandeur.

ਉਸਤਤਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਲਖ ਉਸਤਤੀ ਪਲ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਹੈਰਾਣੈ ।

Myriad eulogists are wonder struck (because they could not eulogise Him properly)

ਅਚਰਜ ਵਿਚਿ ਲਖ ਅਚਰਜਾ ਅਚਰਜ ਅਚਰਜ ਚੋਜ ਵਿਡਾਣੈ ।
acharaj vich lakh acharajaa acharaj acharaj choj viddaanai |

Millions of wonders are full of wonder and they are further surprised to see the awe-inspiring feats of the Lord, the all wonder Himself.

ਵਿਸਮਾਦੀ ਵਿਸਮਾਦ ਲਖ ਵਿਸਮਾਦਹੁ ਵਿਸਮਾਦ ਵਿਹਾਣੈ ।
visamaadee visamaad lakh visamaadahu visamaad vihaanai |

Looking at the completeness of the wonder of that wondrous Lord, the elation feels elated and exhausted.

ਅਬਗਤਿ ਗਤਿ ਅਤਿ ਅਗਮ ਹੈ ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਆਖਾਣ ਵਖਾਣੈ ।
abagat gat at agam hai akath kathaa aakhaan vakhaanai |

The dynamism of that unmanifest Lord is extremely unapproachable and even a shirt account of His grand story is ineffable.

His measurement is beyond lacs of measures.

The Lord is beyond accessibility and all call Him extremely inaccessible.

ਅਲਖਹੁ ਅਲਖੁ ਅਲਖੁ ਹੈ ਅਲਖੁ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖ ਅਲਖੁ ਧਿਆਏ ।
alakhahu alakh alakh hai alakh alakh lakh alakh dhiaae |

He was imperceptible; He is imperceptible and will remain inaccessible i.e. He is beyond all meditations.

ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰਹੁਂ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਭਾਏ ।

Beyond all limits whatsoever is illimitable; the Lord is beyond imagination.

ਆਗੋਚਰੁ ਆਗੋਚਰਹੁ ਆਗੋਚਰੁ ਆਗੋਚਰਿ ਜਾਏ ।
aagochar aagocharahu aagochar aagochar jaae |

He is imperceptible of the imperceptibles and is beyond the reach of sense organs.

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪੂਰਨ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਆਗਾਧਿ ਅਲਾਏ ।

The transcendental Brahm is the perfect Brahm who is eulogised in the holy congregation in many ways.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਪਿਰਮ ਰਸੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲੁ ਹੋਇ ਅਛਲੁ ਛਲਾਏ ।
guramukh sukh fal piram ras bhagat vachhal hoe achhal chhalaae |

The joy of His love is the pleasure fruit of the gurmukhs. The Lord is loving to devotees but is never deluded even by the biggest cheats

ਵੀਹ ਇਕੀਹ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਉ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਏ ।੧੭।

By his grace alone, one can go across the World Ocean enthusiastically.

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪੂਰਨ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰਿ ਆਕਾਰੁ ਬਣਾਇਆ ।

The transecental Brahm is the perfect Brahm and that very formless (Lord) has created all the forms of universe.

ਅਬਿਗਤਿ ਗਤਿ ਆਗਾਧਿ ਬੋਧ ਗੁਰ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਇਆ ।
abigat gat aagaadh bodh gur moorat hoe alakh lakhaaeaa |

He is ummanifest, unfathomable and imperceptible for intellect, but Guru, the icon of beauty, has made me behold the Lord.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਚਖੰਡ ਵਿਚਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲ ਹੋਇ ਅਛਲ ਛਲਾਇਆ ।
saadhasangat sachakhandd vich bhagat vachhal hoe achhal chhalaaeaa |

In holy congregation, the abode of the truth, He emerges as tender towards devotees and deludes even those who never get deluded.

ਚਾਰਿ ਵਰਨ ਇਕ ਵਰਨ ਹੁਇ ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖ ਆਦੇਸੁ ਕਰਾਇਆ ।
chaar varan ik varan hue aad purakh aades karaaeaa |

The Guru alone unites all the four varnas to make them one and further makes them bow before the Lord.

ਧਿਆਨ ਮੂਲੁ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਛਿਅ ਦਰਸਨ ਦਰਸਨ ਵਿਚਿ ਆਇਆ ।
dhiaan mool darasan guroo chhia darasan darasan vich aaeaa |

At the base of all ascetic disciplines is the philosophy of the Guru in which all the six philosophies (of Indian tradition) get subsumed.

ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਨ ਆਪੁ ਜਣਾਇਆ ।੧੮।

He himself is everything but never makes Himself noticed by anyone.

ਚਰਣ ਕਵਲ ਸਰਣਾਗਤੀ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਿਖ ਆਏ ।

In the holy congregation, the disciples of the Guru come in the shelter of the holy feet of the Guru.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦਿਸਟਿ ਨਿਹਾਲੁ ਕਰਿ ਦਿਬ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਦੇ ਪੈਰੀ ਪਾਏ ।
amrit disatt nihaal kar dib drisatt de pairee paae |

The nectar like sight of the Guru has blest one and all and due to his divine look, the Guru has put them all at the holy feet (shelter) i.e. they all have been made humble.

ਚਰਣ ਰੇਣੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਤਿਲਕ ਭਰਮ ਕਰਮ ਦਾ ਲੇਖੁ ਮਿਟਾਏ ।
charan ren masatak tilak bharam karam daa lekh mittaae |

The Sikhs applied the dust of the feet to their forehead and now their account of delusive actions has been erased.

ਚਰਣੋਦਕੁ ਲੈ ਆਚਮਨੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਰੋਗੁ ਗਵਾਏ ।
charanodak lai aachaman haumai dubidhaa rog gavaae |

After drinking the nectar of feet, their maladies of ego and duality have been cured.

ਪੈਰੀਂ ਪੈ ਪਾ ਖਾਕੁ ਹੋਇ ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਆਏ ।
paireen pai paa khaak hoe jeevan mukat sahaj ghar aae |

Falling at the feet, becoming the dust of feet and adopting the way of liberated ones in life they have established themselves in equipoise.

ਚਰਣ ਕਵਲ ਵਿਚਿ ਭਵਰ ਹੋਇ ਸੁਖ ਸੰਪਦ ਮਕਰੰਦਿ ਲੁਭਾਏ ।
charan kaval vich bhavar hoe sukh sanpad makarand lubhaae |

Now having become the black bees of the lotus feet, they are enjoying the nectar of pleasure and delight.

ਪੂਜ ਮੂਲ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਚਰਣ ਦੁਤੀਆ ਨਾਸਤਿ ਲਵੈ ਨ ਲਾਏ ।
pooj mool satigur charan duteea naasat lavai na laae |

The base of worship with them are the lotus feet of the true Guru and they do not allow duality to come near them now.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਏ ।੧੯।

The pleasure fruit of the gurmukhs is the shelter of the Guru.

ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਵੇਦ ਲਖ ਮਹਾਂ ਭਾਰਥ ਰਾਮਾਇਣ ਮੇਲੇ ।
saasatr sinmrit ved lakh mahaan bhaarath raamaaein mele |

Even if Shastras, Smritis, Lakhs of Vedas, Mahabharat, Ramayan etc. are joined together;

ਸਾਰ ਗੀਤਾ ਲਖ ਭਾਗਵਤ ਜੋਤਕ ਵੈਦ ਚਲੰਤੀ ਖੇਲੇ ।
saar geetaa lakh bhaagavat jotak vaid chalantee khele |

Thousands of gists of the Gita, Bhagvats, books of astronomy and acrobats of physicians are joined;

ਚਉਦਹ ਵਿਦਿਆ ਸਾਅੰਗੀਤ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੇ ਬਿਸਨ ਮਹੇਸੁਰ ਭੇਲੇ ।
chaudah vidiaa saangeet brahame bisan mahesur bhele |

Fourteen branches of education, musicology and Brahma, Visnu, Mahesa are put together;

ਸਨਕਾਦਿਕ ਲਖ ਨਾਰਦਾ ਸੁਕ ਬਿਆਸ ਲਖ ਸੇਖ ਨਵੇਲੇ ।
sanakaadik lakh naaradaa suk biaas lakh sekh navele |

If Lakhs of ses, serpent, Sukr, Vyas, Narad, Sanal et al. are all collected there;

ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ਸਿਮਰਣ ਘਣੇ ਦਰਸਨ ਵਰਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਬਹੁ ਚੇਲੇ ।
giaan dhiaan simaran ghane darasan varan guroo bahu chele |

Myriad's of knowledge's, meditations, recitations, philosophies, varnas and guru-disciples are there; they all are nothing.

ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਗੁਰੁ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਮੂਲ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨ ਸੁਹੇਲੇ ।
pooraa satigur guraan gur mantr mool gur bachan suhele |

The perfect Guru (Lord) is the Guru of the gurus and the holy discourse of the Guru is the basis of all the mantras.

ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਹੈ ਨੇਤਿ ਨੇਤਿ ਨਮੋ ਨਮੋ ਕੇਲੇ ।
akath kathaa gur sabad hai net net namo namo kele |

The tale of the Word of the Guru is ineffable; it is neti neti (not this not this). One should always bow before him.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਵੇਲੇ ।੨੦।
guramukh sukh fal amrit vele |20|

This pleasure fruit of the gurmukhs is attained in the early ambrosial hours.

ਚਾਰ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਆਖੀਅਨਿ ਲਖ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਬੰਦੇ ।
chaar padaarath aakheean lakh padaarath hukamee bande |

Four ideals (dharma arth kam and moks) are said to be but such millions of ideals are servants (of Lord, the Guru).

ਰਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਨਿਧਿ ਲਖ ਸੇਵਕੀ ਕਾਮਧੇਣੁ ਲਖ ਵਗ ਚਰੰਦੇ ।
ridh sidh nidh lakh sevakee kaamadhen lakh vag charande |

In His service are millions of miraculous powers and treasures and He has herds of wish fulfilling cows grazing there.

ਲਖ ਪਾਰਸ ਪਥਰੋਲੀਆ ਪਾਰਜਾਤਿ ਲਖ ਬਾਗ ਫਲੰਦੇ ।
lakh paaras patharoleea paarajaat lakh baag falande |

He has lakhs of philosopher's stones and gardens of fruitful wish fulfilling trees.

ਚਿਤਵਣ ਲਖ ਚਿੰਤਾਮਣੀ ਲਖ ਰਸਾਇਣ ਕਰਦੇ ਛੰਦੇ ।
chitavan lakh chintaamanee lakh rasaaein karade chhande |

At one wink of the Guru, lakhs of wish fulfilling gems (chintamini) and elixirs are sacrifice unto Him.

ਲਖ ਰਤਨ ਰਤਨਾਗਰਾ ਸਭ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਸਭ ਫਲ ਸਿਮਰੰਦੇ ।
lakh ratan ratanaagaraa sabh nidhaan sabh fal simarande |

Millions of jewels, all the treasures of oceans and all the fruits recite his praises.

ਲਖ ਭਗਤੀ ਲਖ ਭਗਤ ਹੋਇ ਕਰਾਮਾਤ ਪਰਚੈ ਪਰਚੰਦੇ ।
lakh bhagatee lakh bhagat hoe karaamaat parachai parachande |

Millions of devotees and miracle mongers move around engrossed in hypocrisies.

ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਲਿਵ ਸਾਧਸੰਗੁ ਪਿਰਮ ਪਿਆਲਾ ਅਜਰੁ ਜਰੰਦੇ ।
sabad surat liv saadhasang piram piaalaa ajar jarande |

The true disciple of the Guru, merging their consciousness in the Word, drinks and assimilates the unbearable cup of the love of the Lord.

ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸਤਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲੰਦੇ ।੨੧।੧੬। ਸੋਲਾਂ ।
