(Apatina=indolence. Lovei=bole. Odina=indifferent) Meena=There is a criminal community in the districts of South Punjab whose name is Meena, these people used to rob passengers, gangs and caravans with strange tricks. Here the bad man is called Meena, the general meaning is Misana. You are a hypocrite, a hypocrite

ਤੀਰਥ ਮੰਝਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਬਗੁਲਾ ਅਪਤੀਣਾ ।
teerath manjh nivaas hai bagulaa apateenaa |

Crane though living at a pilgrimage centre remains without faith.

ਲਵੈ ਬਬੀਹਾ ਵਰਸਦੈ ਜਲ ਜਾਇ ਨ ਪੀਣਾ ।
lavai babeehaa varasadai jal jaae na peenaa |

The rain-bird goes on crying during rain but dries not know how to drink water.

ਵਾਂਸੁ ਸੁਗੰਧਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਪਰਮਲ ਸੰਗਿ ਲੀਣਾ ।
vaans sugandh na hovee paramal sang leenaa |

Bamboo may be engrossed in sandalwood but cannot take its fragrance.

ਘੁਘੂ ਸੁਝੁ ਨ ਸੁਝਈ ਕਰਮਾ ਦਾ ਹੀਣਾ ।
ghughoo sujh na sujhee karamaa daa heenaa |

So unfortunate is owl that it never beholds sun.

ਨਾਭਿ ਕਥੂਰੀ ਮਿਰਗ ਦੇ ਵਤੈ ਓਡੀਣਾ ।
naabh kathooree mirag de vatai oddeenaa |

Though musk remains in the el of deer, yet it goes on running around in search of it.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਚਾ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ਮੁਹੁ ਕਾਲੈ ਮੀਣਾ ।੧।

The true Guru is true emperor and the faces of the dissemblers are blackened.

ਨੀਲਾਰੀ ਦੇ ਮਟ ਵਿਚਿ ਪੈ ਗਿਦੜੁ ਰਤਾ ।
neelaaree de matt vich pai gidarr rataa |

Once a jackal fell into a dyer's vat and got dyed.

ਜੰਗਲ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਜਾਇ ਕੈ ਪਾਖੰਡੁ ਕਮਤਾ ।
jangal andar jaae kai paakhandd kamataa |

Taking advantage of its changed colour, it went into the jungle and started dissembling (the animals there).

ਦਰਿ ਸੇਵੈ ਮਿਰਗਾਵਲੀ ਹੋਇ ਬਹੈ ਅਵਤਾ ।
dar sevai miragaavalee hoe bahai avataa |

Sitting arrogantly in its lair, it would frighten the deer into serving it.

ਕਰੈ ਹਕੂਮਤਿ ਅਗਲੀ ਕੂੜੈ ਮਦਿ ਮਤਾ ।
karai hakoomat agalee koorrai mad mataa |

Intoxicated by false pride it started ruling (over the animals) with great pomp.

ਬੋਲਣਿ ਪਾਜ ਉਘਾੜਿਆ ਜਿਉ ਮੂਲੀ ਪਤਾ ।
bolan paaj ughaarriaa jiau moolee pataa |

As eructation indicates the eating of radish leaf, it also got exposed when it (having listened to the howls of other jackals) also started howling.

ਤਿਉ ਦਰਗਹਿ ਮੀਣਾ ਮਾਰੀਐ ਕਰਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਕੁਪਤਾ ।੨।
tiau darageh meenaa maareeai kar koorr kupataa |2|

Thus, the dissembler out of his own hypocrisis is beaten hollow in the court of the Lord.

ਚੋਰੁ ਕਰੈ ਨਿਤ ਚੋਰੀਆਂ ਓੜਕਿ ਦੁਖ ਭਾਰੀ ।
chor karai nit choreean orrak dukh bhaaree |

A thief commits thefts daily but ultimnately has to suffer heavily.

ਨਕੁ ਕੰਨੁ ਫੜਿ ਵਢੀਐ ਰਾਵੈ ਪਰ ਨਾਰੀ ।
nak kan farr vadteeai raavai par naaree |

The ears and nose are chopped of the man who ravishes an other's wife.

ਅਉਘਟ ਰੁਧੇ ਮਿਰਗ ਜਿਉ ਵਿਤੁ ਹਾਰਿ ਜੂਆਰੀ ।
aaughatt rudhe mirag jiau vit haar jooaaree |

The position of the losing gambler is similar to the deer caught in a trap.

ਲੰਙੀ ਕੁਹਲਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਪਰ ਵੇਲਿ ਪਿਆਰੀ ।
langee kuhal na aavee par vel piaaree |

A lame woman may not move properly, but being other's wife she looks lovable.

ਵਗ ਨ ਹੋਵਨਿ ਕੁਤੀਆ ਮੀਣੇ ਮੁਰਦਾਰੀ ।
vag na hovan kuteea meene muradaaree |

Bitches not being there in droves the dissemblers eat the carrion.

ਪਾਪਹੁ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਤਗੀਐ ਹੋਇ ਅੰਤਿ ਖੁਆਰੀ ।੩।
paapahu mool na tageeai hoe ant khuaaree |3|

Through evil actions liberation can never be attained and ultimately one becomes wretched.

ਚਾਨਣਿ ਚੰਦ ਨ ਪੁਜਈ ਚਮਕੈ ਟਾਨਾਣਾ ।
chaanan chand na pujee chamakai ttaanaanaa |

The glow-worm may glow as much as it likes but its shine cannot reach the brightness of moon.

ਸਾਇਰ ਬੂੰਦ ਬਰਾਬਰੀ ਕਿਉ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣਾ ।
saaeir boond baraabaree kiau aakh vakhaanaa |

How it could be said that the ocean and a drop of water are equal.

ਕੀੜੀ ਇਭ ਨ ਅਪੜੈ ਕੂੜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਾਣਾ ।
keerree ibh na aparrai koorraa tis maanaa |

An ant can never equal an elephant; its pride is false.

ਨਾਨੇਹਾਲੁ ਵਖਾਣਦਾ ਮਾ ਪਾਸਿ ਇਆਣਾ ।
naanehaal vakhaanadaa maa paas eaanaa |

A child's describing his maternal grand father's house to his mother is futile.

ਜਿਨਿ ਤੂੰ ਸਾਜਿ ਨਿਵਾਜਿਆ ਦੇ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪਰਾਣਾ ।
jin toon saaj nivaajiaa de pindd paraanaa |

0 dissembler ! if you have totallly forgotten that Lord who has bestowed body

ਮੁਢਹੁ ਘੁਥਹੁ ਮੀਣਿਆ ਤੁਧੁ ਜਮਪੁਰਿ ਜਾਣਾ ।੪।
mudtahu ghuthahu meeniaa tudh jamapur jaanaa |4|

And soul upon you, you will go straight to the abode of Yama

ਕੈਹਾ ਦਿਸੈ ਉਜਲਾ ਮਸੁ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਚਿਤੈ ।
kaihaa disai ujalaa mas andar chitai |

The bronze appears bright but inside it remains blackness .

ਹਰਿਆ ਤਿਲੁ ਬੂਆੜ ਜਿਉ ਫਲੁ ਕੰਮ ਨ ਕਿਤੈ ।
hariaa til booaarr jiau fal kam na kitai |

Baal: weed plant in a field of sesame may be lush green but it. fruit is worthless.

ਜੇਹੀ ਕਲੀ ਕਨੇਰ ਦੀ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਦੁਹੁ ਭਿਤੈ ।
jehee kalee kaner dee man tan duhu bhitai |

The oleander bud has two aspects; externally it is beautiful but internally it is poisonous.

ਪੇਂਝੂ ਦਿਸਨਿ ਰੰਗੁਲੇ ਮਰੀਐ ਅਗਲਿਤੈ ।
penjhoo disan rangule mareeai agalitai |

Pelijha, the ripe fruit of wild caper looks colourful but over eating it man dies instantly.

ਖਰੀ ਸੁਆਲਿਓ ਵੇਸੁਆ ਜੀਅ ਬਝਾ ਇਤੈ ।
kharee suaalio vesuaa jeea bajhaa itai |

Prostitute looks very beautiful but she ensnares the mind (and ultimately man stands finished).

ਖੋਟੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮੀਣਿਆ ਦੁਖ ਦੇਂਦੀ ਮਿਤੈ ।੫।
khottee sangat meeniaa dukh dendee mitai |5|

Similarly, dissembler's company causes suffering for their friends

ਬਧਿਕੁ ਨਾਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਇ ਕੈ ਜਿਉ ਮਿਰਗੁ ਵਿਣਾਹੈ ।
badhik naad sunaae kai jiau mirag vinaahai |

As a hunter inveigles the deer with music and entraps it;

ਝੀਵਰੁ ਕੁੰਡੀ ਮਾਸੁ ਲਾਇ ਜਿਉ ਮਛੀ ਫਾਹੈ ।
jheevar kunddee maas laae jiau machhee faahai |

As the fisherman putting meat on hook catches hold of the fish;

ਕਵਲੁ ਦਿਖਾਲੈ ਮੁਹੁ ਖਿੜਾਇ ਭਵਰੈ ਵੇਸਾਹੈ ।
kaval dikhaalai muhu khirraae bhavarai vesaahai |

As the lotus showing its blossommed face beguiles the black-bee;

ਦੀਪਕ ਜੋਤਿ ਪਤੰਗ ਨੋ ਦੁਰਜਨ ਜਿਉ ਦਾਹੈ ।
deepak jot patang no durajan jiau daahai |

As the flame of lamp burns moth like an enemy;

ਕਲਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੋਇ ਹਸਤਨੀ ਮੈਗਲੁ ਓਮਾਹੈ ।
kalaa roop hoe hasatanee maigal omaahai |

As the paper-model of a female elephant makes the male counterpart erotomaniac;

ਤਿਉ ਨਕਟ ਪੰਥੁ ਹੈ ਮੀਣਿਆ ਮਿਲਿ ਨਰਕਿ ਨਿਬਾਹੈ ।੬।
tiau nakatt panth hai meeniaa mil narak nibaahai |6|

Similarly the way of brazen-faced dissemblers leads towards hell.

ਹਰਿਚੰਦੁਉਰੀ ਦੇਖਿ ਕੈ ਕਰਦੇ ਭਰਵਾਸਾ ।
harichanduauree dekh kai karade bharavaasaa |

How can mirage in desert quench the thirst?

ਥਲ ਵਿਚ ਤਪਨਿ ਭਠੀਆ ਕਿਉ ਲਹੈ ਪਿਆਸਾ ।
thal vich tapan bhattheea kiau lahai piaasaa |

People, in dreams enjoy by becoming kings (but in the morning they possess nothing).

ਸੁਹਣੇ ਰਾਜੁ ਕਮਾਈਐ ਕਰਿ ਭੋਗ ਬਿਲਾਸਾ ।
suhane raaj kamaaeeai kar bhog bilaasaa |

How can one hope that the shade of a tree would remain stationary?

ਛਾਇਆ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਨ ਰਹੈ ਥਿਰੁ ਪੁਜੈ ਕਿਉ ਆਸਾ ।
chhaaeaa birakh na rahai thir pujai kiau aasaa |

All this is a fake show like that of an acrobat's.

ਬਾਜੀਗਰ ਦੀ ਖੇਡ ਜਿਉ ਸਭੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਤਮਾਸਾ ।
baajeegar dee khedd jiau sabh koorr tamaasaa |

One who keeps association with dissemblers,

ਰਲੈ ਜੁ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮੀਣਿਆ ਉਠਿ ਚਲੈ ਨਿਰਾਸਾ ।੭।
ralai ju sangat meeniaa utth chalai niraasaa |7|

Ultimately goes (from this world) disapponited.

ਕੋਇਲ ਕਾਂਉ ਰਲਾਈਅਨਿ ਕਿਉ ਹੋਵਨਿ ਇਕੈ ।
koeil kaanau ralaaeean kiau hovan ikai |

Crows and cuckoos however mixed, cannot be one.

ਤਿਉ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਜਗ ਜਾਣੀਅਨਿ ਬੋਲਿ ਬੋਲਣਿ ਫਿਕੈ ।
tiau nindak jag jaaneean bol bolan fikai |

Likewise the slanderers are distinguished in the world by their cheap and low talk.

ਬਗੁਲੇ ਹੰਸੁ ਬਰਾਬਰੀ ਕਿਉ ਮਿਕਨਿ ਮਿਕੈ ।
bagule hans baraabaree kiau mikan mikai |

How can a crane and a swan be equated by the same measurement?

ਤਿਉ ਬੇਮੁਖ ਚੁਣਿ ਕਢੀਅਨਿ ਮੁਹਿ ਕਾਲੇ ਟਿਕੈ ।
tiau bemukh chun kadteean muhi kaale ttikai |

Similarly the apostates are picked up, separated and stigmatized.

ਕਿਆ ਨੀਸਾਣੀ ਮੀਣਿਆ ਖੋਟੁ ਸਾਲੀ ਸਿਕੈ ।
kiaa neesaanee meeniaa khott saalee sikai |

What is the hall mark of dissemblers? They are like counter-feit coins of a fake mint.

ਸਿਰਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਪਾਹਣੀ ਮਾਰੀਅਨਿ ਓਇ ਪੀਰ ਫਿਟਿਕੈ ।੮।
sir sir paahanee maareean oe peer fittikai |8|

Shoe beating is given on their heads and they are cursed by the preceptor.

ਰਾਤੀ ਨੀਂਗਰ ਖੇਲਦੇ ਸਭ ਹੋਇ ਇਕਠੇ ।
raatee neengar khelade sabh hoe ikatthe |

Children play getting together in the evening.

ਰਾਜਾ ਪਰਜਾ ਹੋਵਦੇ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਂਗ ਉਪਠੇ ।
raajaa parajaa hovade kar saang upatthe |

Someone disguised as King and the rest as subjects, they enact ridiculous scenes.

ਇਕਿ ਲਸਕਰ ਲੈ ਧਾਵਦੇ ਇਕਿ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਨਠੇ ।
eik lasakar lai dhaavade ik firade natthe |

Some of them leading the army rush from place to place and some getting defeated flee helter-skelter.

ਠੀਕਰੀਆਂ ਹਾਲੇ ਭਰਨਿ ਉਇ ਖਰੇ ਅਸਠੇ ।
ttheekareean haale bharan ue khare asatthe |

They pay tax by offering potshreds and thus become wise.

ਖਿਨ ਵਿਚਿ ਖੇਡ ਉਜਾੜਿਦੇ ਘਰੁ ਘਰੁ ਨੂੰ ਤ੍ਰਠੇ ।
khin vich khedd ujaarride ghar ghar noo tratthe |

Within few moments they ruin their game and run for their homes.

ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਣੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਦਾਇਦੇ ਓਇ ਖੋਟੇ ਮਠੇ ।੯।
vin gun guroo sadaaeide oe khotte matthe |9|

Those who without merit call themselves Guru, are sluggish dissemblers.

ਪਉੜੀ ੧੦

ਉਚਾ ਲੰਮਾ ਝਾਟੁਲਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਬਾਗ ਦਿਸੰਦਾ ।
auchaa lamaa jhaattulaa vich baag disandaa |

Tall, high and luxuriant, the silk cotton tree is seen in the garden.

ਮੋਟਾ ਮੁਢੁ ਪਤਾਲਿ ਜੜਿ ਬਹੁ ਗਰਬ ਕਰੰਦਾ ।
mottaa mudt pataal jarr bahu garab karandaa |

It is proud of its stout trunk and deep roots.

ਪਤ ਸੁਪਤਰ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਵਿਸਥਾਰੁ ਬਣੰਦਾ ।
pat supatar sohane visathaar banandaa |

Its beautiful green leaves enhance its spread.

ਫੁਲ ਰਤੇ ਫਲ ਬਕਬਕੇ ਹੋਇ ਅਫਲ ਫਲੰਦਾ ।
ful rate fal bakabake hoe afal falandaa |

But because of its red flowers and insipid fruit it fructifies in vain.

ਸਾਵਾ ਤੋਤਾ ਚੁਹਚੁਹਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਭੁਲੰਦਾ ।
saavaa totaa chuhachuhaa tis dekh bhulandaa |

Seeing it, the chirping green parrot gets deluded

ਪਿਛੋ ਦੇ ਪਛੁਤਾਇਦਾ ਓਹੁ ਫਲੁ ਨ ਲਹੰਦਾ ।੧੦।
pichho de pachhutaaeidaa ohu fal na lahandaa |10|

But repents afterwards because it gets no fruit on that tree.

ਪਉੜੀ ੧੧
paurree 11

ਪਹਿਨੈ ਪੰਜੇ ਕਪੜੇ ਪੁਰਸਾਵਾਂ ਵੇਸੁ ।
pahinai panje kaparre purasaavaan ves |

Wearing five garments one may assume the garb of a male person.

ਮੁਛਾਂ ਦਾੜ੍ਹੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਬਹੁ ਦੁਰਬਲ ਵੇਸੁ ।
muchhaan daarrhee sohanee bahu durabal ves |

He may have beautiful beard and moustaches and a slim body.

ਸੈ ਹਥਿਆਰੀ ਸੂਰਮਾ ਪੰਚੀਂ ਪਰਵੇਸੁ ।
sai hathiaaree sooramaa pancheen paraves |

Wielder of a hundred weapons he may be counted among prominent knights.

ਮਾਹਰੁ ਦੜ ਦੀਬਾਣ ਵਿਚਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਭੁ ਦੇਸੁ ।
maahar darr deebaan vich jaanai sabh des |

He may be an adept courtier and widely known throughout the country.

ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਗਣਿ ਪੁਰਖਤੁ ਵਿਣੁ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਕਿ ਕਰੇਸੁ ।
purakh na gan purakhat vin kaaman ki kares |

But without masculinity, of what use is he to a woman?

ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਦਾਇਦੇ ਕਉਣ ਕਰੈ ਅਦੇਸੁ ।੧੧।
vin gur guroo sadaaeide kaun karai ades |11|

Who would bow before those who are without merit and get themselves called Guru

ਪਉੜੀ ੧੨
paurree 12

ਗਲੀਂ ਜੇ ਸਹੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਤੋਤਾ ਕਿਉ ਫਾਸੈ ।
galeen je sahu paaeeai totaa kiau faasai |

If mere chatter could help meet the beloved, why should a parrot remain encaged?

ਮਿਲੈ ਨ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸਿਆਣਪੈ ਕਾਉ ਗੂੰਹੁ ਗਿਰਾਸੈ ।
milai na bahut siaanapai kaau goonhu giraasai |

He is not attained by over-cleverness and the clever crow ultimately eats faeces.

ਜੋਰਾਵਰੀ ਨ ਜਿਪਈ ਸੀਹ ਸਹਾ ਵਿਣਾਸੈ ।
joraavaree na jipee seeh sahaa vinaasai |

The power also does not win (the intellect wins) because an hare caused a lion killed (by showing its reflection and making it jump into the well).

ਗੀਤ ਕਵਿਤੁ ਨ ਭਿਜਈ ਭਟ ਭੇਖ ਉਦਾਸੈ ।
geet kavit na bhijee bhatt bhekh udaasai |

The beloved is not lured by lyrics and poems, otherwise why should minstrels adopt the garb of sannyasis.

ਜੋਬਨ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਮੋਹੀਐ ਰੰਗੁ ਕੁਸੁੰਭ ਦੁਰਾਸੈ ।
joban roop na moheeai rang kusunbh duraasai |

He is not attracted by youth and beauty because the colour of safflower is not permanent.

ਵਿਣੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਦੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਪਿਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਨ ਹਾਸੈ ।੧੨।
vin sevaa dohaaganee pir milai na haasai |12|

Without service (to the Lord and His creation) this soul is deserted woman and the beloved is not attained merely by laughing (foolishly). He is attained through service.

ਪਉੜੀ ੧੩
paurree 13

ਸਿਰ ਤਲਵਾਏ ਪਾਈਐ ਚਮਗਿਦੜ ਜੂਹੈ ।
sir talavaae paaeeai chamagidarr joohai |

If bowing only could grant liberation then the bats in the forests hang from trees upside down.

ਮੜੀ ਮਸਾਣੀ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਖੁਡਾਂ ਚੂਹੈ ।
marree masaanee je milai vich khuddaan choohai |

If liberation were achieved in the loneliness of crematories then rats should get it in their holes.

ਮਿਲੈ ਨ ਵਡੀ ਆਰਜਾ ਬਿਸੀਅਰੁ ਵਿਹੁ ਲੂਹੈ ।
milai na vaddee aarajaa biseear vihu loohai |

Longevity also does not bring it because snake during its whole long life goes on smouldering in its own poison.

ਹੋਇ ਕੁਚੀਲੁ ਵਰਤੀਐ ਖਰ ਸੂਰ ਭਸੂਹੇ ।
hoe kucheel varateeai khar soor bhasoohe |

If dirt could make it attainable, asses and swines always remain dirty and muddy.

ਕੰਦ ਮੂਲ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਈਐ ਅਈਅੜ ਵਣੁ ਧੂਹੇ ।
kand mool chit laaeeai aeearr van dhoohe |

If relishing over tubers and roots could provide it (liberation), then herd of animals go on hauling and eating them (they should also have attained liberation).

ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਜਿਉਂ ਘਰੁ ਵਿਣੁ ਬੂਹੇ ।੧੩।
vin gur mukat na hovee jiaun ghar vin boohe |13|

As a house (in fact) is useless without door, one cannot attain liberation without Guru.

ਪਉੜੀ ੧੪
paurree 14

ਮਿਲੈ ਜਿ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਤਿਆਂ ਡਡਾਂ ਜਲ ਵਾਸੀ ।
milai ji teerath naatiaan ddaddaan jal vaasee |

If one could attain liberation by taking bath at pilgrimage centres then (we know that) the frogs always live in water.

ਵਾਲ ਵਧਾਇਆਂ ਪਾਈਐ ਬੜ ਜਟਾਂ ਪਲਾਸੀ ।
vaal vadhaaeaan paaeeai barr jattaan palaasee |

If growing long hair could make it available then the banyan has long roots hanging from it.

ਨੰਗੇ ਰਹਿਆਂ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਣਿ ਮਿਰਗ ਉਦਾਸੀ ।
nange rahiaan je milai van mirag udaasee |

If going naked gets it, all the deer in the forest can be called detached ones.

ਭਸਮ ਲਾਇ ਜੇ ਪਾਈਐ ਖਰੁ ਖੇਹ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ।
bhasam laae je paaeeai khar kheh nivaasee |

If herbal medicines could keep one alive, why did Dhanvantri (the father of Indian system of medicine) die?

ਤੰਤੁ ਮੰਤੁ ਬਾਜੀਗਰਾਂ ਓਇ ਭਵਹਿ ਦਿਸੰਤਰੁ ।
tant mant baajeegaraan oe bhaveh disantar |

Conjurers know many tantras and mantras yet they roam about hither and thither in the country.

ਰੁਖੀਂ ਬਿਰਖੀਂ ਪਾਈਐ ਕਾਸਟ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ ।
rukheen birakheen paaeeai kaasatt baisantar |

If worship of trees could make it available, why should trees themselves get burnt (by their own fire)?

ਮਿਲੈ ਨ ਵੀਰਾਰਾਧੁ ਕਰਿ ਠਗ ਚੋਰ ਨ ਅੰਤਰੁ ।
milai na veeraaraadh kar tthag chor na antar |

Adoration of evil and ferocious spirits also does not bring liberation because there is no basic difference between a thief and a cheat.

ਮਿਲੈ ਨ ਰਾਤੀ ਜਾਗਿਆਂ ਅਪਰਾਧ ਭਵੰਤਰੁ ।
milai na raatee jaagiaan aparaadh bhavantar |

Liberation cannot be attained through sleepless nights because criminals too remain awake at night wandering here and there.

ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਮਰੰਤਰੁ ।੧੫।

Without Guru no liberation is achieved and the Guru-oriented, gutmulchs become immortal and make others so too.

ਘੰਟੁ ਘੜਾਇਆ ਚੂਹਿਆਂ ਗਲਿ ਬਿਲੀ ਪਾਈਐ ।

Rats got a bell made so that it could be hung from the neck of the cat (but it could not materialise).

ਮਤਾ ਮਤਾਇਆ ਮਖੀਆਂ ਘਿਅ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਈਐ ।
mataa mataaeaa makheean ghia andar naaeeai |

The flies thought of taking bath in ghee (but all got killed).

ਸੂਤਕੁ ਲਹੈ ਨ ਕੀੜਿਆਂ ਕਿਉ ਝਥੁ ਲੰਘਾਈਐ ।
sootak lahai na keerriaan kiau jhath langhaaeeai |

The defilement of worms and moth never ends then how should they spend their time!

ਸਾਵਣਿ ਰਹਣ ਭੰਬੀਰੀਆਂ ਜੇ ਪਾਰਿ ਵਸਾਈਐ ।
saavan rahan bhanbeereean je paar vasaaeeai |

Insects keep hovering over water surfaces in Silvan (rainy month) howsoever one might try to drive them away.

ਕੂੰਜੜੀਆਂ ਵੈਸਾਖ ਵਿਚਿ ਜਿਉ ਜੂਹ ਪਰਾਈਐ ।
koonjarreean vaisaakh vich jiau jooh paraaeeai |

As in the month of Vaisakh migratory heron birds fly over foreign lands.

ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਈਐ ਜਾਈਐ ।੧੬।

Man without the Guru is not liberated and suffers transmigration.

A cricket sitting on the heap of cloth does not become a draper.

ਕੁਤੇ ਦੇ ਗਲ ਵਾਸਣੀ ਨ ਸਰਾਫੀ ਸਾਜੁ ।
kute de gal vaasanee na saraafee saaj |

If a money belt is tied around the neck of a dog, it does not become a gold merchant.

ਰਤਨਮਣੀ ਗਲਿ ਬਾਂਦਰੈ ਜਉਹਰੀ ਨਹਿ ਕਾਜੁ ।
ratanamanee gal baandarai jauharee neh kaaj |

Tying of rubies and jewels around the neck of monkey does not make it behave like a jeweller.

ਗਦਹੁੰ ਚੰਦਨ ਲਦੀਐ ਨਹਿੰ ਗਾਂਧੀ ਗਾਜੁ ।
gadahun chandan ladeeai nahin gaandhee gaaj |

Laden with sandalwood, the donkey cannot be called a perfumer.

ਜੇ ਮਖੀ ਮੁਹਿ ਮਕੜੀ ਕਿਉ ਹੋਵੈ ਬਾਜੁ ।
je makhee muhi makarree kiau hovai baaj |

If per chance a fly goes into the mouth of a spider, the latter does not become a hawk.

ਸਚੁ ਸਚਾਵਾਂ ਕਾਂਢੀਐ ਕੂੜਿ ਕੂੜਾ ਪਾਜੁ ।੧੭।

ਪਾਲੀ ਚਉਣਾ ਚਾਰਦਾ ਘਰ ਵਿਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੁ ।
paalee chaunaa chaaradaa ghar vit na jaan |

A cowherd grazing animals cannot consider them as his property.

ਬਦਰਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਵੇਗਾਰੀਐ ਨਿਰਧਨੁ ਹੈਰਾਣੁ ।
badaraa sir vegaareeai niradhan hairaan |

A bonded labourer carrying a bag full of money on his head,

ਜਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਖਾ ਖੇਤ ਵਿਚਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਰਸਾਣੁ ।
jiau kar raakhaa khet vich naahee kirasaan |

Would still remain poor and wonderstruck.

ਪਰ ਘਰੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪਣਾ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਮਿਹਮਾਣੁ ।
par ghar jaanai aapanaa moorakh mihamaan |

As caretaker of the crop is not its owner, similarly the guest who considers other's house as his own is a stupid one.

ਅਣਹੋਂਦਾ ਆਪੁ ਗਣਾਇੰਦਾ ਓਹੁ ਵਡਾ ਅਜਾਣੁ ।੧੮।
anahondaa aap ganaaeindaa ohu vaddaa ajaan |18|

He is the biggest ignorant fool who having nothing of his own pretends to be master of everything.

ਹਥ ਮਰੋੜੇ ਮਖੁ ਕਿਉ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੀਂਹ ਮਾਰੁ ।

How can a fly turning and twisting its limbs be a killer of lions?

ਮਛਰੁ ਡੰਗੁ ਨ ਪੁਜਈ ਬਿਸੀਅਰੁ ਬੁਰਿਆਰੁ ।

Mosquito's sting can never equate itself with the poison of a serpent.

Owner of a quilt infected with millions of lice, cannot be called their King or master.

ਅਣਹੋਂਦਾ ਆਪੁ ਗਣਾਇੰਦਾ ਉਹੁ ਵਡਾ ਗਵਾਰੁ ।੧੯।

He who devoid of everything still pretends to have everything is the biggest fool.

ਪੁਤੁ ਜਣੈ ਵੜਿ ਕੋਠੜੀ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜਗੁ ਜਾਣੈ ।

A son is given birth in a closed room but all the people outside come to know of it.

ਧਨੁ ਧਰਤੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਦਬੀਐ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਪਰਵਾਣੈ ।
dhan dharatee vich dabeeai masatak paravaanai |

The wealth even buried in the earth is revealed through facial expressions of the owner.

ਵਾਟ ਵਟਾਊ ਆਖਦੇ ਵੁਠੈ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਾਣੈ ।
vaatt vattaaoo aakhade vutthai indraanai |

Even an ordinary passerby can tell that it has already rained.

ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਸੀਸੁ ਨਿਵਾਇਦਾ ਚੜ੍ਹਿਐ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਾਣੈ ।
sabh ko sees nivaaeidaa charrhiaai chandraanai |

All bow towards it as the new moon rises.

ਗੋਰਖ ਦੇ ਗਲਿ ਗੋਦੜੀ ਜਗੁ ਨਾਥੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ।
gorakh de gal godarree jag naath vakhaanai |

Gorakh has a patched blanket around his neck but the world knows him as nath, the great master.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਚੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਸਚਿ ਸਚੁ ਸਿਾਣੈ ।੨੦।

I am a criminal, a sinner, evil and apostate.

ਚੋਰੁ ਯਾਰੁ ਜੂਆਰਿ ਹਉ ਪਰ ਘਰਿ ਜੋਹੰਦਾ ।
chor yaar jooaar hau par ghar johandaa |

I am a thief, adulterer; gambler who always keeps his eye upon other's household.

ਨਿੰਦਕੁ ਦੁਸਟੁ ਹਰਾਮਖੋਰ ਠਗੁ ਦੇਸ ਠਗੰਦਾ ।
nindak dusatt haraamakhor tthag des tthagandaa |

I am a slanderer, knave, venal and a swindler who goes on cheating the whole world.

ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਮਦੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਕਰੰਦਾ ।
kaam krodh mad lobh mohu ahankaar karandaa |

I feel proud of my sexual urges, anger, greed, infatuations and other intoxications.

ਬਿਸਵਾਸਘਾਤੀ ਅਕਿਰਤਘਣ ਮੈ ਕੋ ਨ ਰਖੰਦਾ ।
bisavaasaghaatee akirataghan mai ko na rakhandaa |

I am treacherous and ungrateful; none likes to keep me with him. Remember,
