ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਗਡੀ ਲਦੀਅਹਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਭਰੀਅਹਿ ਸਾਥ ॥
parr parr gaddee ladeeeh parr parr bhareeeh saath |

You may read and read loads of books; you may read and study vast multitudes of books.

ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਬੇੜੀ ਪਾਈਐ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਗਡੀਅਹਿ ਖਾਤ ॥
parr parr berree paaeeai parr parr gaddeeeh khaat |

You may read and read boat-loads of books; you may read and read and fill pits with them.

ਪੜੀਅਹਿ ਜੇਤੇ ਬਰਸ ਬਰਸ ਪੜੀਅਹਿ ਜੇਤੇ ਮਾਸ ॥
parreeeh jete baras baras parreeeh jete maas |

You may read them year after year; you may read them as many months are there are.

ਪੜੀਐ ਜੇਤੀ ਆਰਜਾ ਪੜੀਅਹਿ ਜੇਤੇ ਸਾਸ ॥
parreeai jetee aarajaa parreeeh jete saas |

You may read them all your life; you may read them with every breath.

ਨਾਨਕ ਲੇਖੈ ਇਕ ਗਲ ਹੋਰੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਝਖਣਾ ਝਾਖ ॥੧॥
naanak lekhai ik gal hor haumai jhakhanaa jhaakh |1|

O Nanak, only one thing is of any account: everything else is useless babbling and idle talk in ego. ||1||

ਲਿਖਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਪੜਿਆ ॥ ਤੇਤਾ ਕੜਿਆ ॥
likh likh parriaa | tetaa karriaa |

The more one write and reads, the more one burns.

ਬਹੁ ਤੀਰਥ ਭਵਿਆ ॥ ਤੇਤੋ ਲਵਿਆ ॥
bahu teerath bhaviaa | teto laviaa |

The more one wanders at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, the more one talks uselessly.

ਬਹੁ ਭੇਖ ਕੀਆ ਦੇਹੀ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੀਆ ॥
bahu bhekh keea dehee dukh deea |

The more one wears religious robes, the more pain he causes his body.

ਸਹੁ ਵੇ ਜੀਆ ਅਪਣਾ ਕੀਆ ॥
sahu ve jeea apanaa keea |

O my soul, you must endure the consequences of your own actions.

ਅੰਨੁ ਨ ਖਾਇਆ ਸਾਦੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥
an na khaaeaa saad gavaaeaa |

One who does not eat the corn, misses out on the taste.

ਬਹੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
bahu dukh paaeaa doojaa bhaaeaa |

One obtains great pain, in the love of duality.

ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਨ ਪਹਿਰੈ ॥ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਕਹਰੈ ॥
basatr na pahirai | ahinis kaharai |

One who does not wear any clothes, suffers night and day.

ਮੋਨਿ ਵਿਗੂਤਾ ॥ ਕਿਉ ਜਾਗੈ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੂਤਾ ॥
mon vigootaa | kiau jaagai gur bin sootaa |

Through silence, he is ruined. How can the sleeping one be awakened without the Guru?

ਪਗ ਉਪੇਤਾਣਾ ॥ ਅਪਣਾ ਕੀਆ ਕਮਾਣਾ ॥
pag upetaanaa | apanaa keea kamaanaa |

One who goes barefoot suffers by his own actions.

ਅਲੁ ਮਲੁ ਖਾਈ ਸਿਰਿ ਛਾਈ ਪਾਈ ॥
al mal khaaee sir chhaaee paaee |

One who eats filth and throws ashes on his head

ਮੂਰਖਿ ਅੰਧੈ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥
moorakh andhai pat gavaaee |

the blind fool loses his honor.

ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
vin naavai kichh thaae na paaee |

Without the Name, nothing is of any use.

ਰਹੈ ਬੇਬਾਣੀ ਮੜੀ ਮਸਾਣੀ ॥
rahai bebaanee marree masaanee |

One who lives in the wilderness, in cemetaries and cremation grounds

ਅੰਧੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਣੀ ॥
andh na jaanai fir pachhutaanee |

- that blind man does not know the Lord; he regrets and repents in the end.
