ਆਪੁ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਸਰਨਿ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ॥
aap tiaag saran guradev |

Give up your selfishness and conceit, and seek the Sanctuary of the Divine Guru.

ਇਉ ਰਤਨ ਜਨਮ ਕਾ ਹੋਇ ਉਧਾਰੁ ॥
eiau ratan janam kaa hoe udhaar |

Thus the jewel of this human life is saved.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥
har har simar praan aadhaar |

Remember the Lord, Har, Har, the Support of the breath of life.

ਅਨਿਕ ਉਪਾਵ ਨ ਛੂਟਨਹਾਰੇ ॥
anik upaav na chhoottanahaare |

By all sorts of efforts, people are not saved

ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ ਬੇਦ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥
sinmrit saasat bed beechaare |

not by studying the Simritees, the Shaastras or the Vedas.

ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਇ ॥
har kee bhagat karahu man laae |

Worship the Lord with whole-hearted devotion.

ਮਨਿ ਬੰਛਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਫਲ ਪਾਇ ॥੪॥
man banchhat naanak fal paae |4|

O Nanak, you shall obtain the fruits of your mind's desire. ||4||

ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਚਾਲਸਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਧਨਾ ॥
sang na chaalas terai dhanaa |

Your wealth shall not go with you;

ਤੂੰ ਕਿਆ ਲਪਟਾਵਹਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨਾ ॥
toon kiaa lapattaaveh moorakh manaa |

why do you cling to it, you fool?

ਸੁਤ ਮੀਤ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਅਰੁ ਬਨਿਤਾ ॥
sut meet kuttanb ar banitaa |

Children, friends, family and spouse

ਇਨ ਤੇ ਕਹਹੁ ਤੁਮ ਕਵਨ ਸਨਾਥਾ ॥
ein te kahahu tum kavan sanaathaa |

who of these shall accompany you?

ਰਾਜ ਰੰਗ ਮਾਇਆ ਬਿਸਥਾਰ ॥
raaj rang maaeaa bisathaar |

Power, pleasure, and the vast expanse of Maya

ਇਨ ਤੇ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਵਨ ਛੁਟਕਾਰ ॥
ein te kahahu kavan chhuttakaar |

who has ever escaped from these?

ਅਸੁ ਹਸਤੀ ਰਥ ਅਸਵਾਰੀ ॥
as hasatee rath asavaaree |

Horses, elephants, chariots and pageantry

ਝੂਠਾ ਡੰਫੁ ਝੂਠੁ ਪਾਸਾਰੀ ॥
jhootthaa ddanf jhootth paasaaree |

- false shows and false displays.

ਜਿਨਿ ਦੀਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਬੁਝੈ ਨ ਬਿਗਾਨਾ ॥
jin dee tis bujhai na bigaanaa |

The fool does not acknowledge the One who gave this;

ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਾ ॥੫॥
naam bisaar naanak pachhutaanaa |5|

forgetting the Naam, O Nanak, he will repent in the end. ||5||

ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਤੂੰ ਲੇਹਿ ਇਆਨੇ ॥
gur kee mat toon lehi eaane |

Take the Guru's advice, you ignorant fool;

ਭਗਤਿ ਬਿਨਾ ਬਹੁ ਡੂਬੇ ਸਿਆਨੇ ॥
bhagat binaa bahu ddoobe siaane |

without devotion, even the clever have drowned.

ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਮਨ ਮੀਤ ॥
har kee bhagat karahu man meet |

Worship the Lord with heart-felt devotion, my friend;
