Maaroo, Third Mehl:

ਏਕੋ ਸੇਵੀ ਸਦਾ ਥਿਰੁ ਸਾਚਾ ॥
eko sevee sadaa thir saachaa |

I serve the One Lord, who is eternal, stable and True.

ਦੂਜੈ ਲਾਗਾ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਕਾਚਾ ॥
doojai laagaa sabh jag kaachaa |

Attached to duality, the whole world is false.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਾਚੇ ਹੀ ਸਾਚਿ ਪਤੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
guramatee sadaa sach saalaahee saache hee saach pateejai he |1|

Following the Guru's Teachings, I praise the True Lord forever, pleased with the Truest of the True. ||1||

ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਮੈ ਏਕੁ ਨ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
tere gun bahute mai ek na jaataa |

Your Glorious Virtues are so many, Lord; I do not know even one.

ਆਪੇ ਲਾਇ ਲਏ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ ॥
aape laae le jagajeevan daataa |

The Life of the world, the Great Giver, attaches us to himself.

ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਭੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
aape bakhase de vaddiaaee guramat ihu man bheejai he |2|

He Himself forgives, and bestows glorious greatness. Following the Guru's Teachings, this mind is delighted. ||2||

ਮਾਇਆ ਲਹਰਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ॥
maaeaa lahar sabad nivaaree |

The Word of the Shabad has subdued the waves of Maya.

ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੀ ॥
eihu man niramal haumai maaree |

Egotism has been conquered, and this mind has become immaculate.

ਸਹਜੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਰਸਨਾ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਵੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
sahaje gun gaavai rang raataa rasanaa raam raveejai he |3|

I intuitively sing His Glorious Praises, imbued with the Lord's Love. My tongue chants and savors the Lord's Name. ||3||

ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਤ ਵਿਹਾਣੀ ॥
meree meree karat vihaanee |

Crying out, "Mine, mine!" he spends his life.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਫਿਰੈ ਇਆਣੀ ॥
manamukh na boojhai firai eaanee |

The self-willed manmukh does not understand; he wanders around in ignorance.

ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਘੜੀ ਮੁਹਤੁ ਨਿਹਾਲੇ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਆਰਜਾ ਛੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
jamakaal gharree muhat nihaale anadin aarajaa chheejai he |4|

The Messenger of Death watches over him every moment, every instant; night and day, his life is wasting away. ||4||

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਕਰੈ ਨਹੀ ਬੂਝੈ ॥
antar lobh karai nahee boojhai |

He practices greed within, and does not understand.

ਸਿਰ ਊਪਰਿ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਸੂਝੈ ॥
sir aoopar jamakaal na soojhai |

He does not see the Messenger of Death hovering over his head.

ਐਥੈ ਕਮਾਣਾ ਸੁ ਅਗੈ ਆਇਆ ਅੰਤਕਾਲਿ ਕਿਆ ਕੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
aaithai kamaanaa su agai aaeaa antakaal kiaa keejai he |5|

Whatever one does in this world, will come to face him in the hereafter; what can he do at that very last moment? ||5||

ਜੋ ਸਚਿ ਲਾਗੇ ਤਿਨ ਸਾਚੀ ਸੋਇ ॥
jo sach laage tin saachee soe |

Those who are attached to the Truth are true.

ਦੂਜੈ ਲਾਗੇ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਰੋਇ ॥
doojai laage manamukh roe |

The self-willed manmukhs, attached to duality, weep and wail.

ਦੁਹਾ ਸਿਰਿਆ ਕਾ ਖਸਮੁ ਹੈ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੇ ਗੁਣ ਮਹਿ ਭੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
duhaa siriaa kaa khasam hai aape aape gun meh bheejai he |6|

He is the Lord and Master of both worlds; He Himself delights in virtue. ||6||

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਦਾ ਜਨੁ ਸੋਹੈ ॥
gur kai sabad sadaa jan sohai |

Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, His humble servant is exalted forever.

ਨਾਮ ਰਸਾਇਣਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਹੈ ॥
naam rasaaein ihu man mohai |

This mind is enticed by the Naam, the source of nectar.

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਮੈਲੁ ਪਤੰਗੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਭੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
maaeaa moh mail patang na laagai guramatee har naam bheejai he |7|

It is not stained at all by the dirt of attachment to Maya; through the Guru's Teachings, it is pleased and saturated with the Lord's Name. ||7||

ਸਭਨਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਇਕੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
sabhanaa vich varatai ik soee |

The One Lord is contained within all.

ਗੁਰਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
guraparasaadee paragatt hoee |

By Guru's Grace, He is revealed.

ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਾਇ ਸਾਚੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
haumai maar sadaa sukh paaeaa naae saachai amrit peejai he |8|

One who subdues his ego, finds lasting peace; he drinks in the Ambrosial Nectar of the True Name. ||8||

ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਦੂਖ ਨਿਵਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ॥
kilabikh dookh nivaaranahaaraa |

God is the Destroyer of sin and pain.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
guramukh seviaa sabad veechaaraa |

The Gurmukh serves Him, and contemplates the Word of the Shabad.

ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਭੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
sabh kichh aape aap varatai guramukh tan man bheejai he |9|

He Himself is pervading everything. The Gurmukh's body and mind are saturated and pleased. ||9||

ਮਾਇਆ ਅਗਨਿ ਜਲੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੇ ॥
maaeaa agan jalai sansaare |

The world is burning in the fire of Maya.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥
guramukh nivaarai sabad veechaare |

The Gurmukh extinguishes this fire, by contemplating the Shabad.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਲੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
antar saant sadaa sukh paaeaa guramatee naam leejai he |10|

Deep within are peace and tranquility, and lasting peace is obtained. Following the Guru's Teachings, one is blessed with the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||10||

ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਾਸਣਿ ਬੈਠੇ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥
eindr indraasan baitthe jam kaa bhau paaveh |

Even Indra, seated upon his throne, is caught in the fear of death.

ਜਮੁ ਨ ਛੋਡੈ ਬਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ॥
jam na chhoddai bahu karam kamaaveh |

The Messenger of Death will not spare them, even though they try all sorts of things.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ਤਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਪੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
satigur bhettai taa mukat paaeeai har har rasanaa peejai he |11|

When one meets with the True Guru, one is liberated, drinking in and savoring the sublime essence of the Lord, Har, Har. ||11||

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
manamukh antar bhagat na hoee |

There is no devotion within the self-willed manmukh.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
guramukh bhagat saant sukh hoee |

Through devotional worship, the Gurmukh obtains peace and tranquility.

ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਬਾਣੀ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਅੰਤਰੁ ਭੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
pavitr paavan sadaa hai baanee guramat antar bheejai he |12|

Forever pure and sanctified is the Word of the Guru's Bani; following the Guru's Teachings, one's inner being is drenched in it. ||12||

ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
brahamaa bisan mahes veechaaree |

I have considered Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.

ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਬਧਕ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਿਰਾਰੀ ॥
trai gun badhak mukat niraaree |

They are bound by the three qualities - the three gunas; they are far away from liberation.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਏਕੋ ਹੈ ਜਾਤਾ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਵੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
guramukh giaan eko hai jaataa anadin naam raveejai he |13|

The Gurmukh knows the spiritual wisdom of the One Lord. Night and day, he chants the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||13||

ਬੇਦ ਪੜਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਬੂਝਹਿ ॥
bed parreh har naam na boojheh |

He may read the Vedas, but he does not realize the Lord's Name.

ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਲੂਝਹਿ ॥
maaeaa kaaran parr parr loojheh |

For the sake of Maya, he reads and recites and argues.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਅੰਧਾ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਦੁਤਰੁ ਤਰੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
antar mail agiaanee andhaa kiau kar dutar tareejai he |14|

The ignorant and blind person is filled with filth within. How can he cross over the impassable world-ocean? ||14||

ਬੇਦ ਬਾਦ ਸਭਿ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ॥
bed baad sabh aakh vakhaaneh |

He voices all the controversies of the Vedas,

ਨ ਅੰਤਰੁ ਭੀਜੈ ਨ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣਹਿ ॥
n antar bheejai na sabad pachhaaneh |

but his inner being is not saturated or satisfied, and he does not realize the Word of the Shabad.

ਪੁੰਨੁ ਪਾਪੁ ਸਭੁ ਬੇਦਿ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
pun paap sabh bed drirraaeaa guramukh amrit peejai he |15|

The Vedas tell all about virtue and vice, but only the Gurmukh drinks in the Ambrosial Nectar. ||15||

ਆਪੇ ਸਾਚਾ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਈ ॥
aape saachaa eko soee |

The One True Lord is all by Himself.

ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
tis bin doojaa avar na koee |

There is no one else except Him.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਰਵੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੬॥
naanak naam rate man saachaa sacho sach raveejai he |16|6|

O Nanak, true is the mind of one who is attuned to the Naam; he speaks Truth, and nothing but Truth. ||16||6||

Raag Maaroo

Maru was traditionally sung on the battlefield in preparation for war. This Raag has an aggressive nature, which creates an inner strength and power to express and emphasise the truth, regardless of the consequences. Maru’s nature conveys the fearlessness and strength that ensures the truth is spoken, no matter what the cost.
